11/6:

1. Per my previous post I will explain the dirty little secret of how banks make money from foreclosure.

First you must ask, how did banks, that just a year ago needed bailout money, get so cash heavy.

Sure was not from loaning money and in fact it is from foreclosures.  And here is how.

The percentages are the same so lets use a house with a mortgage of $100,000 but only worth

$40,000.  The bank agrees to short sale the house for $40,000 providing the mortgagee will split

'the loss' and agree to sign a note for $30,000.   On the surface it appears the bank is losing $30,000

but wait............our 'government' covers the loss and gives the bank the $60,000 they lost.  So now the

bank has the original $100,000 from the mortgage and got the homeowner on the hook for another

$30,000. This is how the banks can offer to pay people to relocate as I addressed in a previous post.

Sometimes they get homeowners to agree to sign a loan agreement for the entire 'loss' and in that

case they would have made $60,000. With those kind of numbers on the books there is all kinds of

ways to settle the debt and all of it is in favor of the banks. To add injury to insult the banks have a

'third party', whom they are close with, buy the house for the $40,000 who can then hold it or sell it

for a profit and the bank (under the table) makes money on that side also.  There ya go.  Some people

say 'patatos' and some say potatos' and some say 'the sky is falling' and it all goes back to money

(greed) with NO logic or common sense.

Bob Waldorf

2. Shirley Shirley.  Let me remind you if it walks like a duck, quacks like and duck and looks like a duck

.........it must be a duck.  WE HAVE GAMBLING or don't you get out of your house enough to know that.

Every convenience store has lotto, Moose, VFW and Eagles have gaming machines and the Duval Home

in Deland is offering a $10,000 poker tournament. The big difference is that because we don't have the

Debary Downs we don't have additional tax revenue that we could have gotten from that business or the

Race Trac. The ironic part is that who goes to the Moose, VFW, Eagles etc.....the senior and war vets.  Most

fought for FREEDOM of which you want to restrict. Shame on you. So who doesn't want gambling in Debary?

The unknowing.  The State of Florida is going to have casino gambling and that will include Daytona and

possibly Orlando unless the 'rat' can stop it because it would conflict with its family image. It is no wonder

you support Leon because you know with him in office the city will stay the way it is with vacant decaying

buildings on 17-92 and vacant offices on Enterprise and decaying 'former model homes' on Dirkson.

Wow...is this city something to be proud of or what?  Opportunity doesn't happen often so the next time,

if there is a next time, somebody better use some common sense and jump on the opportunity or just wait

and watch more businesses close and more houses become vacant but we won't have gambling or a

convenience store off I-4. Debary remains the chuckle of Volusia County and believe me the cities around

us don't want it any other way.

Bob Waldorf

11/3:

You know Mort, you make me chuckle! I know you just love to rattle my cage!

Shirley H.

****************

Kodos to Mort.  I understand now that we do agree on 'EVERYTHING'

(well just about). That being said this is to my good friend Rich Gailey.............you still don't get it.  I live

off Highbanks between Enterprise and 17-92 right next to the church that burnt up on one side and an

auto body repair shop, lumber yard and strip row of mechanics on the other side so I really don't see

much difference in what you are saying about your 'back yard' and mine.  In fact, knowing where you

live, my house is actually closer to those 'bad bad businesses' than yours and you know what........they

don't have any affect on me what so ever and in fact I bought my house here 7 years ago and there

were here long before me.  The undeniable truth is that no one, other than myself, went to any of the

residence close to the current Rac Tracs in other areas, and asked the resident who live around them

what effect, if any, the Rac Trac has had. Nor did anyone consider the findings of the staff, school or any

other study.  The few that fought against, and won, the deniall of  the change that would have

permitted the Rac Trac, were only thinking of themselves and not the entire city.  Is that fair?   So your

opinion is based on the wants of a few with disregard to the benefits of the many.  Mort ask a good

question.....where are your children going to work............on or in a image?

Adding to my last post I cannot help but turn on the TV and hear

about Kim Kardashian getting a divorce, which I truly do not give a shoot about.  However what I don't

hear is how the Hotel and Restaurant Union in California is pushing through legislation to restrict house

cleaning personal from 'lifting the mattress' to change the sheet because it might injure their back.

Wonder where that story is?  Want an umbrella yet??

I would like to refer to JB's coments of 10/28, scroll

back a couple of days and check them out.

I think JB is calling someone an OWS wanna be...I can only

guess what that means?  Maybe he is refering to the Occupy Wall Street movement.  He also claims someone is intellectually lazy..... that is how he intellectually reacts...what is he talking about?

This JB also claims someone or something is Pathetic.....

and claims someone copies from Msnbc , move on the huffington post etc.  He excludes the FOX NEWS .

.the GOP channel.

JB...what are you even talking about?   Why don't you just

say what you mean, quit being vague and lazy .     Wall St. is mostly a symbol, most swindling , scamming

and speculating is done on computers the results of their scheming is reflected on Wall St.  The Occupy Wall

St movement is just making a statement about AMERICAN GREED.

Wall St. is the biggest rigged casino in the world its is all

about gambling, speculation, deciet.image, borrowing and above all GREED. It has little to do with honesty

and hard work. and we should be proud that anyone is pointing it out.

Refering to Fred K's comments of 10/30... Fred speaks of "evil

gambling barons"....is this  serious?  He must be refering to the State of Florida and it's LOTTO  or the VFW,

church groups, Moose lodge with their Bingo.  Lets shut down the Florida Lotto and raise taxes so we can

afford to pay for our school system.  Wall St is the biggest Casino in the world maybe he wants to shut that

down , maybe he wants to join the OWS movement?

Fred also refers to someone figuratively spitting on our men and

women in uniform... LMAO!  It is the US Government that is sending them to sacrifice their time and lives for NOTHING and it is worse than spitting on them.  There will no victory for the USA ...only tragedy...hide and watch.

It is the US Government that is killing and maiming our soldiers

and ruining our economy.  We will never win anything in the mideast ever.  We are far beyond broke and

fighting these fake wars with borrowed money from our dismal economic future. Do you think sending our

soldiers to be targets is smart?  Our loss in the MIDEAST is guarenteed by the element of time.

We can review what we have ' won' with these wars so far ...

TRILLIONS in new debt, thousands of DEAD US servicemembers, 10's of thousands of dead innocent

people in the region. and more hatred for the US than ever.

Our own government is dominated by US corporations that are

profitting from these wars FRED, it is all part of our war economy. Where do you think all those billions

we are borrowing are going ....from the US Treasury to US corporations via phony wars that we start.

PEACE....is the last thing the US Corporate/Governement wants,

because there is no money in PEACE.  ' Support the troops ' actually means support the war...can't you

people read NEWSPEAK?  Norm knows what NEWSPEAK is , do you?

You remember the sad events of 9/11/01...who profitted from this

long term?  It was not the American Taxpayers, it was US Corporations, thousands of them and they are

still profiteering., it is part of our false war/defense economy.

The Civil War, WW1, WW2 only took 4 years each.....but with

all of our killing tech we cannot win these wars in 10 years?   We do NOT want to win...why spoil a perfectly

good war with victory.  The US Government is not  ' of, or for the people' anymore, it is a cancer upon the

people of this nation.

Americans are actually looking to their government to solve their

economic problems, COMPLETELY ignoring the fact that the US Government is what caused our economic

problems.    The Fox has been guarding the henhouse and now the American people think the Fox should

fill the henhouse with borrowed hens and guard it again.

11/2:

Remember 2010 Amendment 4: Should the public vote on changes to growth plans?

- How many of Debary's city council at the time supported Amendment 4?
- How many of the current crop of city council candidates supported Amendment 4; or took

the time to read Amendment 4?

For those who do not remember, Amendment 4 to the Florida Constitution would have

required voter approval of proposals that would change local growth-management plans.

What a novel concept .. empower the citizenry. I think if the OWS crowd was around back

in 2010 they might have chanted: .... "this is what democracy looks like".

With regard to Debary's upcoming elections I believe that this Amendment would have made

it more palatable for Debary citizens like myself to support Real Estate Agents, Brokers, and

contractors who might be running for city council.

As a result of Amendment 4 failing I will absolutely not support anyone running for city

council who works in the real estate business (e.g. agents, contractors, brokers, etc). The

truth is that once sworn in, this kind of candidate will instinctively begin looking out for their

"own", brokering changes to the Debary growth management plan that benefit themselves

and their associates. FACT!

Gentlemen,

We have no real parks in this city except Gemini Springs

and Lake Monroe  they are County Parks?.

Why are we spending so much on a semi existent City Parks

system?   Now you people want to BEAT the taxpayers for more money for this overfunded dept.

Gateway Park is an arts business/fundraising center and a

disgrace to the community, why do taxpayers have to fund it's FLEA MARKET and Christian Church

and Arts Store?

Our ridiculous city appears to want....$810,555 for our Parks

and Recreation..that amounts to $2,220.69 per day.

It is easy for council members to GIVE AWAY taxpayers money,

they never had to earn it

Our Parks dept could be run with one person and we do not

even need a Recreation Dept.

Citizens should be in charge of their own recreation , what a

concept!  Can you imagine no more silly recreation programs...how could we survive?

Please QUIT WASTING taxpayer money on this crap, we are

a city $12M in debt with a debt service of $465,547...that is $1275.47 per day

11/1:

OCT 31,2011

I owe an apology to Mr Waldorf  as Norm points out he did

use this website to express his view points as a candidate.  Bob thinks that I am for Leon Crenkoski ,

sorry I gave that impression, I just appreciate anyone that might not agree with  Debary's silly giveaway

programs and its anti- business attitude.  I do not see much difference between either current candidates

viewpoints, politicians will claim to lean anyway they think will get em votes. I have never met either

candidate and do not care to, they are just politicians that will dispense money they never had to earn

for projects that are often uneccesary. We do not know what we have until after they are elected.

Both candidates appear to 'pay lip' service to such issues as

fiscal responsibility and maintaining a so-called Family Values community. Both claim to want only certain

businesses in Debary which means they are looking for politically correct business such as doctors offices

and banks,  Neither want to spoil the illusion of Debary as a politically and culturally correct with HOA's ,

gated communities and  churches in their expensive parks. Debary must maintain its IMAGE, who cares

about real money making taxpaying businesses when we can all live on IMAGE.  Perhaps when your

children are looking for a job, you can tell them to live on Debary's  great all american IMAGE.

All..... IMAGE and ZERO jobs, that is Debary, a city that cannot

even approve of a gas station under the I-4. There would be many jobs RIGHT now if the Debary

Downs project was approved...but old retired people are selfish and do not have to work anyway,

they kill business opprotunities while they are living on government checks.

Both these candidates want the storm system finished...you

remember the storm system that helps out country club subdivisions at every one else's expense.

Many Debary residents were smart enough to live on high ground, yet are forced by 'Socialist Debary'

to pay for those that were foolish enough to buy property in low areas.   I have never heard one

Debary flood victim claim any responsibility for the fact that they are mostly responsible for buying or

building in low areas in a hurricane prone state.   When people that build near beaches , rivers and

lakes get flooded out....THEY ARE GETTING EXACTLY WHAT THEY DESERVE according to the law, I am

referring to the laws of physics and hydrodynamics.   Why should the taxpayers  in the City of Debary

be held responsible for their mess , the City is just socializing the flood problems of the minority on

the backs of the majority.  Volusia County approved most of those houses to be built where they are

because they wanted the tax revenue and to please developer's greed.

Norm says get out there and vote...too bad we cannot vote

the City of Debary out of existence, we already had enough government with the County of Volusia,

State of Florida and the Corrupt Quagmire in Washington DC.

10/31:

I would like to speak in support of Leon Cerankowski running for Seat #4, Debary City Council.

I have met Mr. Cerankowski and his wife, Debbie. I have listened to their concerns and beliefs.

They are both troubled about what’s been happening in Debary, and much to their credit,

want to do something about it. I would rather see a conservative in Seat #4, than another

liberal who (I believe) leans in favor of the gambling issue. Granted, it would be nice for

Debary to attract new business and additional revenue for the City coffers. But, and I mean

BUT, we need to be very careful as to the types of businesses we allow in our City. Easy

money is not always the best way to go. It’s been shown over and over again that gambling

establishments not only bring revenue, but also bring a lot of additional expenses and

headaches for the community.

On another note, comments have been made about Leon Cerankowski’s business being

located in Orange City and not Debary. Actually, folks, that’s pretty good business sense!

Remember the old adage: Location … Location … Location! Being situated on Saxon in

Orange City, he draws people not only from Orange City, but also from Deltona and Debary.

Just so happens I shop at Debbie’s Health Foods, and I live in Debary!

Please vote for Leon on Tuesday, November 8th.

Shirley Horchler

***********************************************

Bob, when are you going to get over not having another mega gas station in DeBary.

Why don't you propose a zoning change in your neighborhood and put one right smack

dab in the center of you community. I wonder how popular you would be???
Is there any government spending proposal you do not agree with??? In your post it looks

like you want increased local spending (council member family staffed TAX PAYER funded

organizations), Sunrail (only funded for 7 years for 4200 max cars) whaich does not work

in three largest counties in state (Tri-Rail Palm Beach, Broward, Dade) so lets do it in Smaller

Osceola, Seminole, Volusia and ORange, and it sounds like Bob is for bailing out the banks,

AGAIN!!! Bob, all this socialism you talk about is great until you run out of other people's

money. What is wrong with partnering with businesses for sponsoring opportunities around

community events? It is a win, win, win situatiion - The local business gets exposure, event

gets funded, and tax payer does not get bilked for more of "THEIR" hard earned money.

Rich Gailey - American Tax Payer, We feed the world.

10/30:

I was just wondering if during all the NIMBYing, figuratively spitting on the men and women

of the U.S. military, declaring that NOTHING
will ever change, the possible return (yea right, possible) of the evil gambling barons,

bemoaning of community events and the like... ANYONE noticed that the council seems to

be trying to overturn the will of DeBary voters!

I seem to remember DeBary voting on this very issue a year or so ago and voting it down.

What gives? I know it isn't supposed to affect the current council---the point is we have all

ready voted on this!

Thanks for listening
Fred K

From Norm: Lenny Marks has a great editorial on this coming this

Thursday night or Friday morning.

************************************************

I am starting to worry about Mort C.  It appears he supports Leon

which is fine but it contradicts a lot of what he says here on pop.  Either Mort doesn't understand '

everything' that Leon stands for or he has changed his opinion and done a complete 180. Leon does

not want 'big' business and Leon wants the businesses of Debary to pay for community events.  Well

maybe that is an unfair statement because it was not he that said that but his wife who has been

considerably more vocal than Leon.  So on that point I stand to be corrected.  However it is nice to say

you want Debary business to pay for community events when your business is in another city. Mine is

in Debary.  Now according to Mr. Gailey, who supports Leon and I must believe they both think a like,

told me the reason for the RaceTrac convenience store being voted down, or one of the reasons, was

the owners live in another city and that is where they would spend their money.  He then states that

while Leon has a business in another city he chooses to pay taxes in Debary.  Ok but how many people

would have worked in the Debary Race Trac? How many Debary people work in the Orange City health

food store?  If you check the businesses in the south end of Volusia county around Deltona Blvd and

Dirkson, you will find quite a few live in the general area.  (I checked - they do)  In addition Leon pays

property taxes in Debary and that is good but the Race Trac would have paid approximately $100,000

in sales tax to Debary and I know that Leon does not pay $100,000 per year in property tax.  I praise

Leon, and Rich, for wanting new business but in case they haven't notice the little mom and pops are

closing not opening and every big business that wants to open gets turned down.  There would have

been so many people (bringing their money) riding the Sunrail to Debary from all across Central Florida

to view Debary Downs and how many upscale stores and other businesses would have sprung up from

just that and that alone (maybe even so mom & pops). And as far as family...........Rich........how long to

you think your children are going to stay in Debary once they are old enough to leave.  What would they

stay here for?  Debary Downs would have been great for the elderly citizens and the tourist and the

Race Trac would have brought revenue from travelers getting on and off I-4 on their way to somewhere

else.  That also means it would not have had an adverse impact on Deltona Boulevard traffic. Wonder if

Rich or Leon even looked at the staff report?  So lets stay focused on logic and truthfulness and be

careful when someone wants Debary business to spend money while he maintains business in two

other cities.  Hmmmm.......definition of hypocrite please.

Bob Waldorf

10/28:

Yep, that's right. PoP's very own, luvable, "OWS wanna-be" has posted another predictable

comment, chock full of intellectually dishonest (and intellectually lazy) platitudes; no doubt

'copied' from the likes of: DailyKOS, HuffingtonPost, MoveOn, MSNBC, and the DNC. Sad &

pathetic!

**************************

Was there anyone other than myself that was amazed and confused

this last week over at least two topics on radio and one in the newspaper.

The first topic was from an ad in the News Journal stating that

Bank of America would give between $5000 and $20000 to a person to who was 'short selling' their

house to help them relocate.  Being a real estate investor I know the reason but this ad amazed me.

The reason is to help prevent a person from being mad and destroying the house when they finally must

leave. By giving them money to move they must leave the house in good condition.  It is called - Cash for

Keys.  However my common sense tells me that if they can give you money to have you move they can

use that same money to reduce your mortgage and refinance your property thereby making it a win for

the bank and a win for a home owner.  But then that type of logic was used months ago when the

government gave money to 'banks' so they would not go under instead of giving it to the people,

who's money it was anyway from taxes, so they could pay their mortgage, car payments etc etc and

thereby funneling the money upward instead of downward which we knew then and are convinced now,

doesn't work.  One of these days I will post how banks actually make MORE money when your house is in

foreclosure.  I hope that surprises you because when I found out it made me sick.......but it is true.

Next one on the radio was the 'P' test.  The requirement for people

requesting government assistance to take a 'P' test was struck down.  Amazing.  Wonder how many of you

have to agree to being tested just to have your job?  Now the people that get YOUR MONEY don't have to be

tested.  On that one I ask 'where is the logic'?  The report said 'only two percent of those tested failed the

test'.  Wow that's great...........but then they said there were 1600 that refused to take the test.  Wonder

why?  Is everyone gotten a case of the patriotic spirit all of a sudden and didn't want to be 'forced' into

submitting?  My thought is we should have added the 1600 who refused the test to the 2% that failed.

Wonder what % we would have then?  But since when did reporting news require being through. Well

that's my opinion.

Bob 'The Sky is Falling' Waldorf
Sky might not be falling but it sure is starting to rain hard and some don't even realize there

is a cloud in the sky.

John, sorry I do not have the wrong information, you insist on
giving the wrong information. I'm just gonna tell you I have been in
Debary when your house was a vacant lot, and you where younger.
you have had your moments of outburst in many places, more than once.
what you have to learn is when somebody ask you to step away from them or leave them alone you

need to listen to thier wishes.

and I can see nothing has. I will keep hoping for a brighter day

Angie

10/27

Enjoyed Angies comments on negativity, as if to imply that

people that disagree with her views are negative.  That is an old game. Religious businesses such as

church groups claim they are so GOOD, therefore implying that anyone that disagrees with them must

be evil or negative..maybe even naysayers. Debary never needed to become a city and is worse off for

it in the long run.

Sure Angie, Debary is so good, that is why we have so many

celebrations and pass on debts instead of being responsible,  Many of our leaders claim to care about

the children and at the same time go into debt to solve flooding problems of today.  Who will pay in the

long run Angie, I am paying for flooding problems I never had because of this foolish city and its lack of

guts.

This city is $12 million in debt Angie,,for what, a new city

hall and drainage issue?  Debary's city hall should be located in what is currently our police sub station.

The people that were flooded out deserved to be flooded out, the flood was an act of GOD, then let

him/her/it  pay for it.

The City of Debary spends money and wealth it does NOT have just

like our broke and backwards nation spends its future generations wealth on the problems of today.

Our city government is ridiculous..celebrate that with some chinese firecrackers.

As for JB's comments on our GREAT Military....you have got to be

kidding me.  It is a great military success...that is why we have troops in over 160 countries.  Remember

when we thought the commies were going to take over the world , what the hell are we trying to do?

We are trying to run the whole world with our military stomping into and bombing any country we want

to. Our GREAT military is running on borrowed billions...that is great?    Where are we borrowing those

billions JB?   Hint..from the future .....we cannot afford our gold plated military JB especially because we

do not want to win anything anyway. War is a business, think not ,just follow the money..most all comesback to corporations in the USA.

We have $8 billion aircraft carriers launching $75 million

dollar aircraft to shoot mudhuts, camels and peasants in the mideast.    That is really stupid...we have

ZERO chance of winning anything in the mideast except more phony puppet governments we will have

to support with borrowed money.

The whole point of the attacks of 9/11/01 were to get the USAbogged down in a war in Afghanistan according to Osama Bin Laden.

So what do we do, get bogged

down in Afgahistan and IRAQ at a long term cost of at least $5 TRILLION dollars.   These are not any

dollars JB,  they are borrowed dollars, you know what that means...intrest...we are borrowing even

more money just to pay the intrest JB.

So our GREAT military is winning right...wrong ,because our

GREAT military is only as good as its orders.  Our enemy has no Navy,Marines,AirForce or organized

Army, yet they are winning, ya know why JB...because TIME is on their side.  We will defeat ourselves

because of the great expense of our great military and the great illusion for which it stands.

Our nation does not own the rest of the world....we cannot defy

economic gravity forever with the cost of our occupations, intimidation and bombings.

Our troops need to go home and wash their hands.

Don't you realize what these wars and our arrogant international

meddling have cost us JB?  Our military empire is crumbling from the weight of its own folly. They say

$2 billion per week in Afghainstan alone, what a price tag for our ugly  REVENGE...right JB

Our great military...right.     It is great alright as it

accomplishes NOTHING but debt, death and destruction.   Our GREAT military is great, too bad it is

not used to defend this country at its own borders.

I know something about the military, I was in it at one

time and worked for military subcontractors.  It is more about billion dollar contracts than it is about

defending this nation.

    Mort C.

10/24:

hello boys, been along time and I see NOTHING has changed. You guys still have nothing good

to say about anything that is going on in the city. All you want to do is bash everybody that

gives their time to the city. In Case you have not hear or should I say you don't want to hear,

people are sick and tired of the negativity that flows from your site that is why there are barely

any comments anymore, or you want to hammer the average person for misspelling. God forbid

if they do not agree with you, you talk about the Mayor going on a temper tantrum....you go on

a keyboard temper tantrum. Anybody that believes that THIS BLOG SITE is the truth and nothing but the

truth is blind.

This is the views of the creators of this site and a few radicals that believe only their own words.
Mr. Likakis you bring up the "ETHIC" charges YOU brought against the Mayor..I wouldn't brag to

much about that because I have a set of papers that are the final results from the charges YOU

brought against our Mayor, and they state he was found "INNOCENT" OF all charges against him.

A matter of fact they say he did NOTHING WRONG, and if you did not like the way he governed

the city to show it at the voting poles! Anybody can get a set of these papers from the board of

ethics state of Florida. Although I know YOU have a set.
Last but not least I know for a fact that the Mayor knows more about ROBERTS RULES OF

ORDER than most. He has practiced these very same rules for many boards and for a new

councilman to sit there and say "none of us here know much about Roberts rules of order" is a

false statement. Maybe HE don't know about Roberts rules of order, but he should not speak for

the entire board. I for one am glad EVERYBODY gets a chance at their 3 minutes, that's how it

should be.
I really hope you guys find happiness in your life, because if you care about the city half as much

as you say you do you would speak of her good things and realize WE all have our own opinions

that's what makes this country great. Please stop being so critical of everybody else's opinion

Angie Dobies

FROM NORM:

Angie,

Thanks for being a regular reader of POP – it’s why readership has gone up from 350 or 400 a hits a month

six years ago to a monthly average of 2500 hits a month today. I, too, wish more wrote in...but with 13,000 registered

voters and only 624 voting, I guess it's par for the course. But new voices are being heard.

Secondly, since 2007 I’ve been speaking out against City Management. So was Lenny Marks and John Likakis.

At the last workshop – 10/19 – I agree with all five council members: we have a great City Manager, Asst. City

Manager and a great City Planner. This wouldn’t have happened without criticism, ability, real leadership and taking

the shots both political and personal as will be proven below. CM Hunt said that he and the Council benefit from having

a great trio in place and the change or tumult we went through to get there - I agree with him. So, the criticism,

complaining and demand for competent management at the top paid off – it worked. Out of 86 applicants Lenny Marks

and myself found CM Parrott. The Mayor who would have many believe he has leadership abilities, brought absolutely

nothing, nada, zip to the table on the second City Manager search.

So now we look at the very top: Council members who should be coming prepared and ready to run a meeting; the

Mayor is not capable of that and it’s demonstrated when he’s there but particularly when he’s not and the meetings

run better for his absence, which has been happening a lot lately: I can’t remember a vice-mayor running more meetings

than Jack Lenzen.

Next, attacks and stirring it up. I now quote you, Angie, from last year on Mr. Meister’s blog:

I hear that his web site is run through the Seminole county school Internet. I think he has told them that this is for

educational purposes. can anyone find out about this? I would not want my child learning this type of negativity.

Something like this is put on a blog when that person, you, Angie, have nothing to combat the facts that are being

presented. So “hearsay” attacks, literally, are started. That there is no truth to what you wrote, is irrelevant. The

attack continued on the same blog:

FROM MISSIONMAN ON MR. MEISTER’S BLOG SOMETIME IN JANUARY OF 2011:

I would like to know if an employee, lets say of Seminole County School District, should happen to create a website that

contains controversial political material from Volusia County and uses the resources of that particular school district.

Do you think this would constitute dismissal? This is just purely hypothetical of course.

What really bothers Angie and people of her ilk are when facts are used to argue City issues. They can’t stand it and

revert to threats, charges of racism or an attempt to go after someone’s job. And then people like Angie say, “Why the

personal attacks?” “Why are you guys being so negative?” Mr. Meister’s blog was created solely to attack myself and

Lenny Marks and you were a regular contributor and this all shows that negativity and attacks are fine if they are

directed at Norm and Lenny…but if facts are cited at other people and/or issues – that’s bad. This was all explained a

long time ago. But I’m really glad you wrote in again so I could cover this new information about how you wanted to

bring my job into the picture.

As for the Ethics Committee, the Mayor supposedly sent things up to the Ethics Committee about Mr. Conoley - I'm sure the Mayor

was doing this on principle. But if anyone were to do it against the Mayor it would be personal...perhaps racist - right?

If those items about Mayor Garcia are deemed appropriate behavior by the Ethics Committee, then we have a

problem with the Ethics Committee. State Statute: 112.320: Commission on Ethics; purpose: to serve as guardian of the

standards of conduct for the officers and employees of the state, and of a county, city, or other political subdivision of

the state. Lying, yelling at a citizen, making a threat to a fellow sitting Council member and bursting into a meeting

yelling profanity with an email by a witness to corroborate it, these behaviors and others do not seem to be, at least

to me, the kinds of behavior I would approve of. I guess the Ethics Committee has changed their purpose – so that

behavior will continue; you seem to be in favor of that kind of behavior, excuse it and defend it, Angie – we disagree.

I’m a very happy person: what I once criticized about City management has now been corrected and the current

Council agrees - although Carson and Garcia defended the previous dysfunctional management – is that leadership

and ability? The challenge for this and future Councils is that management needs real answers to real questions.

What has Mayor Garcia actually done? The record reflects a tenure of supporting poor management and creating a

fecal storm where none existed. He yells, screams, and threatens and talks a great, great game – but what has he

done? He makes no motions to move the meeting forward, he speaks last which puts him in a safe position after he

sees how the vote is going to go. He talks tough as a leader but demonstrates no actual qualities that a leader would

exhibit. Rarely says what he means and means what he says. The moment any attempt at improving something occurs,

like the running of meetings, he throws a tantrum because he takes it personally.

Angie, there are plenty of people to sit around and tell each other how great they are. The Mayor loves to tell the

Council how great they are doing as if he is someone above them and they are subordinate. How would he know,

anyway? He didn’t know the City wasn’t being managed correctly. He lied to the Council and the people about his

role in the FEMA reimbursement to make people think he was responsible for bringing in millions of dollars - he had

nothing to do with it - I give that credit to CM Courson who gave the order to go after it.

But go ahead, sit around and tell each other how great you are. It’s how we got to

where we were 4 years ago.

I love it when this happens: a nameless person holds a website to a higher standard of accountability

than his/her

City Council especially the City Council and City Manager of years ago that was truly a "mutual admiration

society". This person is complaining about a website but probably never complained about the dozens of

actual City issues raised on this website for the past 6 soon to be 7 years.

That I post anything from anyone is a service I provide truly free of charge to the citizens of DeBary.

Even for the "JB"'s of DeBary. "JB", I anxiously await your apology.

From 10/19:

A few days ago some faceless bombastic blowhard posted the following on this website: "This country

has no enemy greater than the ... ignorance of it's own people."

What a jerk!

oh yeah .... Hey Mort - Have a fantastic NIMBY day.

Yep it is true - hence this forum has officially been busted - and proven to be nothing more than a mutual

10/22:

Interesting points brought up by Bob Waldorf and Anita G.

about local apathy.  Really who cares, who cares about real issues that actually mean something?

Why should the City Council worry about the $12 million

dollar debt when they can deal with easy subjects like 'events' or Parks & Recreation?  Just pass on the

debt to the next generation and then claim you care about the children's future.

Why should the CC concern itself with businesses and jobs for

the citizens when they can bend with the wind and let themselves be dominated by NIMBYS.

Debary has enough Parks,  Recreation , Events, Fundraisers, Arts Hustlers, Non Profit Organizations and NIMBYS.   Debary needs a business friendly atmosphere to

attract commerce, jobs and tax revenues.

Our City claims to care about the children.....guess what..

those children are going to eventually need JOBS and the closer the better.  Debary politicians have no

view of the future at all..just 'feel good' projects like baseball field lighting.

Arts Centers, Parks, Monuments and Non Profit Organizations do not provide tax revenue , they devour tax revenue and provide little for the economy.

Debary is trying to maintain some sort of an image of a elite community when it is just another broke municipality spending

money it does not have on 'feel good' projects it does not need.

But ya gotta look on the bright side, with the issues

we have, Debary is still better than Newark , New Jersey or Whistledick, Texas.

Meanwhile...back at the ranch....Our President says we are

getting our troops out of IRAQ.......Right...sure we are...we still have thousands of troops in KOREA sixty

(60) years after that war ended.

Ask Congressman John Mica about the war in IRAQ, he voted for

it and supported it. Ask him about the 1 trillion or so dollars wasted on it and the 4425 dead soldiers .

We have won nothing, not even the lesson, but who cares anyway?   Who cares?

Mort C.

10/21:

Dear Bob and Mort:

I really appreciate your efforts on behalf of the City that will be my home next year. However, no one in

the City (particularly the the City Council and staff)is listening to you. In the words of Jerry Jeff Walker

you are "***ing in the wind".

As you noted by the poor turnout for recent elections, people aren't sufficiently interested in their City

and their tax dollars to turn off their big screen tvs one evening a month to attend a Council meeting or

vote once a year. It is the same everywhere. Until something becomes personal, no one pays attention.

For years John Likakis has been a voice crying in the darkness. He tries to tell his neighbors, he writes editorials, he attends meetings and shares his thoughts with anyone who is interested. But no one

listens. It must be disappointing to call for action and participate for so many years to no avail. God bless

you, John!

Chris Carson has lots of time to study items before the Council as he is no longer working for the City of

Winter Springs. But he continues to be a one-cause council person. For him that is recreation. Maybe that

is all he knows or cares about in the City. He serves only one faction of the citizens. Does anyone else see that??

No one is responding to editorials from either POP or citizens on these issues. I don't expect anyone to respond to

these thoughts either.

They ignored past editorials for Council members and staff to read their

own laws and meeting materials.

Mort...............STOP.........no one is listening.  I have

been accused of being "Bob - the sky is falling - Waldorf '' and while I would tell them why they should

carry an umbrella they probably would not even know what it is because...........they are too busy

watching The X Factor or worrying about what Brad Pitt is doing or who is wearing what down the 'red

carpet'.  Mort you don't get it ................the brain dead don't care.  They think people like you and I

are 'crazy'.   Remember you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.  We have developed

into a country that thinks what we have was 'given to us' - FOR FREE !!!.  They refuse to remember or

even accept the price that was paid and therefore they have no reason to believe that anything will

change. Scary ..... No......because you and I won't be here to deal with the fallout......real...yes.......but

they do

n't care (until it is to late).  642 voted in the Debary primary and the two that are now in the general

election are not even business people for Debary and one is rich from other areas  and wants Debary

business to pay more while they have their business in Orange City. The other only 'works' in Debary

and admittedly cannot sell real estate in Debary because NO ONE WANTS TO MOVE TO DEBARY.  They

both only want to be elected so they can say there were elected for and by the people.  The 'brain

dead people'.  Our current councils hollers about 'redistrict' because that gives them a photo opp and

a statement in the newspaper while they vote against community growth.  Mort...THEY (nor you) can not

teach an old dog new tricks and Debary is made up of 'old dogs' with no idea about the here and now

and they really don't care because they came here for what it is...........A LITTLE SLEEPING NOTHING.

So let it go, let them have it, and let them ignore what is coming because they don't even see the clouds

in the sky (and even if they did could care less) but they accuse you and I of thinking its raining.

Remember - hind sight is 20/20.  Strange how all the people that made this country great were

considered crazy (like you and I )....but no one wants to remember that because then they would

have to face the current truth and who wants to do that??.

WHAT???

No celebration of our ten (10) years of war in Afghanistan, aren't the citizens of DEBARY,FL proud?

Debary celebrates anything, Christmas INC. New Years, Autumn,

4th of JULY, the 9/11/01 attack, why no fireworks for our ten (10) years of ugly REVENGE in Afghanistan?

Why are there no celebrations??  I'll tell you why, because we

are LOSING on every level. Every life and every penny was a total waste.  Our invasion forces have created more terrorists than they have destroyed as our military ' GUESS BOMBS' an enemy they have created

Our expensive ineffective military is still stuck in Iraq, Afghanistan and bombing in Libya , Yemen and

Pakistan under the

false banner of NATO.  Our controlled newscasters speak of suspected US Drone strikes, what a joke,

the USA bombs any nation it chooses and kills anyone it chooses and has no respect for any nation's

borders including it's own.

This paranoid  nation has wasted TRILLIONS on these UGLY wars

of revenge and are destined to lose in them long run.   Afghanistan and IRAQ are not American provinces,

they belong to the people that live there.   If our rotten corrupt government would stop meddling , invading and profittering from war , we would have less enemies and more friends

The US government has illegally invaded many countries ,

because Americans are under the illusion they can somehow control the world through its outrageous destructive military and it's false dishonest monetary system.

The USA is not a real superpower anymore as it leans on the

rotten crutches of borrowed money, lies and it's past successes. The USA is still shaking in its boots after

the attacks of 9/11/01, attacks that were minor compared to the bombings the USA has unleased upon the

world

There is no nation on planet earth that has bombed more nations

or borrowed more money from it's future than the USA.

Our military madness and corporate profiteering will be

eventually 'phased out' in Afghanistan and Iraq there will be NO CELEBRATIONS as there were none

after the US humiliated itself in Vietnam. This country has no enemy greater than the greed and ignorance

of it's own people.

There has never been peace in the mideast and our government

is just a corporate and special intrest controlled cancer making everything worse in the name of freedom.

9/25:

I have only written in a couple of times but again I must speak up.

This mayor is atrocious - not that many members of the Council are much better. He absolutely has no

idea how to run a meeting, he still whines when he doesn’t get his way and the list goes on. He never

shuts up which is how he bull----ed his way into office in the first place. And now three years later, he is

going to walk right back in unopposed. You people out there should be ashamed - no one could stand

up and run against him. Thank God he can’t run for a third term.

Council Members we elected you too - and we can take you out in future elections. Read you packets,

learn your by-laws, codes, etc., and try to look half-way intelligent up there. Oppose the Mayor when he

is wrong and, for God’s sake shut him down when he babbles on.

This Mayor is detrimental to our good City and the citizens should make better choices in the future.

Elect people who deserve to sit on the council, not because they are your friend or their mommy and

cohorts urge you to give their child a job. Ask questions, do your due diligence and vote in the right

people, not the people who have the biggest mouths. A big mouth does not equal big brains!

My husband and I have formed a web-cam party on Council Meeting nights. We had 8 people there

for the meeting on the 21st. We will try to enlarge our group and encourage more groups to form.

The consensus from our group was that the Mayor can not run a council meeting but he can’t even run a workshop. If he doesn’t get his way expect a hissy fit.

9/22: THE ART OF FUNDING...

So on September 22, the Volusia County Council is slated to approve over $600,000 of funding to Arts

Organizations. One has to question how the Sands Theater Center in DeLand is slated to receive over

$46,000 in funding when just this summer they were caught in an agreement with a For Profit company

and have supposed to have been paying property taxes on the Athens Theatre. The Athens is the Tax

Payer funded restoration that ended up costing $10 million to restore. Needless to say their agreement

with a For-profit violates ECHO rules but no one seems to be checking. Since the organization doesn't

have any full time paid employees, how does their budget get so high? And when you try to check out

their IRS 990s, there doesn't seem to be any filings since 2008 -

http://dynamodata.fdncenter.org/990s/990search/esearch.php
This funding is supposed to be for non-profits that operate within the guidelines.

Art Waller

**************************

Mr Wagner,

The County Council votes on Arts Funding at this week.  Why is the Sands Theater is still eligible for

Non-profit funding?  The Community Cultural Grant is supposed to be for Non-profits.  This summer the

News Journal ran an article saying the Athens lost their non-profit exemption because they leased the

Athens to a For-Profit so they get Tax Credits -  another way of getting taxpayer money. This agreement

would seem to violate the ECHO rules that say projects cannot be leased or sub-leased to for-profit entities.  Why has this been overlooked?  Hopefully they paid their back taxes. When you try and look up the Sands Theater Center 990 forms on the IRS website, you get sent to a 990 Finder and the Sands Theater Center doesn’t have any 990s past 2008.   If they aren’t up to date, why are they getting more funding? In their budget for funding, have they detailed what is a for-profit expense and what is a non-profit cost?

The County gives out Tax dollar money based on how much an applicant claims they spend. The Sands

Theater is requesting $53,346.   It is hard to believe that an organization with no full time employees has a budget that warrants the amount of money requested? The Daytona Playhouse is only requesting $13,245.  The New Smryna Theater is requesting 27,869.   If construction costs are not supposed to be included in budgets, why can the Sands Theater use payments on a line of credit loan left over from construction and

used for the purposes of getting their Tax Credits for their For profit operation in the budget they use for the Community Grant? Why should organizations who try to follow the rules get less money because someone

else stretches the rules?

Thank you for your service.  And yes, we need more beach parking.

Pat

9/19:

IT’S A GREAT DEAL IF YOU CAN GET IT, TOO…

Let’s review the bidding:

Just 9 months ago CM Carson wanted to start a committee of citizens to work on a calendar of events – we already

have one on the City’s website – but this is what he said.

Then the Committee was to create events. When CM Carson was asked by CM Koval what kind of events,

“Fireworks” was CM Carson’s only response.

This “Committee” then turned into a non-profit organization that has private meetings - no citizens, no accountability,

The Community Partnership Program (CPP), is registered in CM Carson’s aunt’s name: Sue Lombardi. The president is

CM Koval’s wife Lorraine Koval.

On the board are Marsha Carson, CM Carson’s mother, and CM Carson’s uncle, Gerald Lombardi. These are

what we call facts and I pass no judgment. The CPP was given an award and it was presented to

CM Carson – not Sue Lombardi, the president of the CPP, nor any of its board members.

Now this non-profit organization is being given 3000 dollars of taxpayer money for the Autumn Harvest. Next

year they have asked for and have gotten into the budget 20,000 dollars for the fireworks show - the fireworks show

that wasn't going to cost us anything - in fact, it was going to spur economic activity. Just two months later and it's

costing us money.

Debbie and Leon Cerankowski have spoken out against this – please keep it up as what you’re saying makes sense.

This started just 9 months ago and if everyone is fine about it, that’s great. Just wanted

to make people aware that a Committee idea to clear up a calendar that already existed has now changed into

a non-profit organization that is receiving taxpayer money. They play the "this is

a private non-profit." When they want funding, they become "public non-profit". It will happen with Team Volusia

and it is happening with Obama and the Solyndra story: Private when it suits us, public when we need money.

The line item that increased from 500 dollars to

20,000 dollars is still in the budget and it’s a 4000% increase for the fireworks display. Will the Council even

talk about who put this in the budget and why the other four agreed?

If the Council gives 20K to the CPP, will there be accountability? How will we police the money?

If you can get it, too, it’s a great deal for your non-profit as well.

9/17:

These comments will probably fall on deaf ears because people who read this are probably part of the

624. However they can tell their neighbors about this because they may be part of the remaining

approximately 11,400.  People who run for City of Debary elected office do it because they believe

they have ideas and suggestion and experience that will help all the citizens of Debary.  They spend

money making signs, take time out of the daily lives to talk to people, stand on hot street corners

and basically give up their normal lives during the time the voters are deciding on who to vote for.

Then on election day all they ask you to do is take 5 minutes that is FIVE minutes out of your daily

schedule and cast a vote. That ’s all they want from you.  5 minutes to vote. Out of approximately

12,000 registered voters only 642 cast a vote last Tuesday – September 13 th .  That is pathetic,

shameful and almost sinful.  However who is to blame? Debary didn't even put the voting date in its

news letter or even on the fire station sign until citizens complained at about 3:30pm voting afternoon.

What a joke. Rumor is the fix was in and they didn't want to take a chance their local home picked

favorite would not win so they just didn't tell anyone.  Hmmmm....... Say it ain't so 'comrade'. But it sure

helped me make a decision for my future.  After two failed attempts I have decided never to run for any

elected office in the City of Debary.  For those of you who know me I apologize to you because you have

been solid supporters over the last two elections.  For those who think you know me because of what

they read in the paper I feel sorry for you. You think you know so much when you actually know nothing

and you probably would shake in fear if anyone would try and bring up your background the way they

have done mine - TWICE.  Enough said on that. There are a lot of folks in Debary that are whining about

the re-district map being voted on.  There are many that don ’t even know what it is and even mor e

that don ’t care.  The handful that have been diligently fighting for Debary in Deland should be

appreciated.  That includes some of the city council and quite a few citizens.  I was not one of them

but I strongly commend them for their effort. But there is something those fighters needed to consider.

Maybe Debary doesn ’t get respect because it doesn’t deserve it. Twice in the last few years Debary

has had the opportunity to stand up for themselves and show the county that they are a force to be

reckoned with but instead, both times, they choose to show the county that they are nothing more than

small town Debary.  Not accepting new business and just allowing more to close. That is OK if that is

what you want but you can ’t have it both ways.  No wonder the east side gets ‘what they want’.

You can’t deny progress and at the same time ask to have your voice heard or be a serious economic

contender.  Yes I know there are those that will say it has nothing to do with economics and maybe that

was a bad term beca use the fact is that Debary is just 'stands still' and doesn't have the support of its

citizens because of the restrictive attitude it takes toward business in order to keep the 'vocal' happy.

How sad. There is nothing going on in Debary so no one at that county council really cares, I mean really

cares.  Problem is most of you don ’t want to face the truth and that is why I scared you.

I bring the truth – like it or not. I just heard this week of talk about sun rail taking folks all the way to

Daytona beca use Daytona may allow the expansion of gambling. That ’s funny.  Debary could have

been a destination but apparently it is content with being a ‘stop along the way’. I know of one more

business that just closed in Debary because Debary holds on to that old home town ‘cave’ attitude –

Citizens Against Virtually Everything making Debary and ‘banana’ type city – Build Absolutely Nothing

Anywhere Near Anyone. The closed business, a coffee shop business right on 17-92.  That is sad.

So citizens – lend me your ear s.  The general election is November 8 th of this year 2011! You have

approximately 52 days to make arrangements to take 5 minutes out of your schedule to vote.  There

are two candidates running for seat 4 and I respect them both, however I am now absolutely convinced

that many voters only vote for people because they ‘like them personally’ and don’t have a clue, or care,

what they would do, or have done, for the city –-- but the fact is there are two candidates that worked

really hard running their campaign s.  If they are willing to give their time, and money,  then you should

be willing to give 5 minutes to exercise your right to vote.  As far as the city having it's voice heard and

respected it must change it's attitude and let everyone know that you are going to start aggressively

soliciting new business growth for the city and then, maybe -just maybe, you will become a serious city

with more folks moving in (instead of out) and will gain the power of the people so the 'voices' of the

people will be heard and the City of Debary will be listened to and respected.
November 8 th – general election – vote.

A New Chapter in the Same Old Story

However, none of the city councils of Deltona, DeBary and Orange City or our District 5

representative caved, and they should be commended because there were county representatives

looking for cover and only one found it.
I guess I need to get used to not having enough representation on the council. Will you please do

me a favor county council members and stop telling me how you represent the entire county (or the

majority)when you are going to kick out this piece of work. The map is an embarassment and all you

have to do is look at the jagged and patched together boundaries on the east side and Deland districts

to meet needed constituency groups. Then look at the nice clean cuts around the cities of Deltona,

Orange City and THROUGH DeBary, you know the cities who had the audacity to hold open votes

regarding their preferred map in a timely fashion. The cows that shows up first are the first ones to

be butchered. Congratulations should go out to all the east side/Deland ciites that got every map

manipulation that was requested. If you cannot be proud at least be happy. And too little too late

CM Andy Kelly finally got the cover he was seeking thanks to another flop on the council. Your support

would mean so much more to us on the southwest side if you did not wait until after the vote was

already counted to support our southwest city borders. And to my fellow southwest border cities start

working hard to earn enuogh money to pay for the extension and relocation of the Deland Station of

Sunrail through Delands city core and over to the east side where the train will drop you off at the new

parking garage's on the beach that will continued to be funded with southwest volusia taxpayer dollars.

It is always wise to extend rail in a county without trafic problems to the side of the county with

decresaing population numbers where major employers have pulled out. But then again that is why

we have a county that pays the second highest taxes per county in the state. But Hey, they have

10 more years to make us number 1!!!

From Norm: The Mayor wanted to flip and go with 9 so the Council could "sit at the table" and decide

where DeBary would be amputated.

9/9:

A friendly reminder - the primary elections are coming on September 13th, next Tuesday.

Debarypop is about the closest thing candidates have for a venue and I want to thank the host

for continuing to keep the site updated.  While I would like everybody to vote for me I know that

will not happen so I ask you to please do the following:

Please carefully consider each candidate for their individual merit and what they have done and

what they want to do, for the City of Debary.  Consider the commitment each candidates has shown

before the elections and not just since registering.  Do not vote for a candidate because they look nice,

talk nice or know certain people.  This is a much more important election than what some people realize

and too many times people ask 'who should I vote for' from a neighbor or 'friend'.  I have absolutely no

problem standing on my own merit both past and present.  I personally do not need to attack others in

my attempt to be elected and I personally feel sorry for those that do.  I want to thank Mr. Norm Erickson

for nominating me to the Street Scape Committee last year and I hope that I have served well. I am

looking forward to my recommended design to be installed in the near future.  I have been blessed to

be a volunteer for the service I have been able to provide to Debary and thankful for some service I

have not been able to provide such as being called to action for the CERT Team. As a candidate I am

personally available to answer any questions about issues facing Debary and can be contacted via my

web site at: www.bobwaldorf.com  Please give each candidate your direction consideration and no matter who you choose please exercise your right to vote next Tuesday.

Thank you

Message for Mort C.

Hey Mort. I usually do not waste my time responding to bombastic blowhards who spend their free time bullying people on a social web site; but your recent post, subj: "what will America remember?" demands a request.

I'll keep it simple; given your demonstrated lack of intellect & common sense. This request is very straight forward. Please cite your source for the following assertions that you made in subject post:

1. "...the tens of thousands of innocent people our military killed in the mideast"

2. "We need to remember .... the death of over 6000 US soldiers"

3. ".. and the cost of at LEAST five (5) TRILLION dollars..."

4."..Our military efforts have created just as many terrorists as it has destroyed."

Sadly I suspect that you will not be able to provide one credible source; yet I am 100% certain that you will continue to 'spam' this web site with unsubstantiated BS. Do me a very big favor and STFU!

Have a fantastic NIMBY day.

Redistricting or "As the Council Turns" Is the fix in???

Why is the County Council trying to turn Mayor Garcia??? Why Him??? See NJ redistricting article dtd. 9/7.

Volusia County voting districts still up in air - News

If I were mayor I would be offended that these county council members, who created their own

problem by flopping, would ask me for cover after the DeBary council had a vote and supported map

10 without any negative feedback from the community the council represents. The current county

council is now trying to pit Deltona vs. DeBary in this fight. MAp 10 keeps all of the west side cities

intact with their natural borders, so why split us? CM Persis stated that "Daytona and Port Orange

are split so one of the west side cities needs to be split". What??? I know he used to be a principal

at a govt. run school and nanny nanny boo boo may have worked on his playground, but we deserve

better leadership at the county level. You, as I quote "represent the entire county". If you are so intent

on splitting west side communities move one of the districts from the east side to the west then you

can also restore Daytona and Port Orange to their natural city boundaries as long as that is O.K. with

the 2 east side families you had to satify with the three remainig maps. Why doesn't any Deland

represetative support Map 10 and why do they care so much about what happens in DeBary? Do you

remember 2 years ago, also after labor day weekend, when the Stetson (Deland) students packed our

city council wearing the same t-shirts regarding DeBary Downs? Watch out DeBary, the next meeting

scheduled 9/14 at 9am. old courtroom in Deland, your represetation is being diluded without much

county support. You will be able to speak at the next meeting, however the school board who also

supports MAP 10 (4-1), will not be allowed to participate in this meeting. I wonder why???

Rich Gailey

From Norm: I don't think the County is being a good partner..not working together...not a good relationship...

not a good working relationship: all the things that politicians give so much lip service to. Those good working

relationships go out the door when push comes to shove and DeBary always seems to get the short end. What will

Mayor Garcia do? He Flipped on Team Volusia, he flipped on the Strategic Planning,

he flipped on not running for office again, he flipped on saying it wouldn't bother him to not have an office. So therefore,

...he will flip for the County on this...how many times will the Mayor flip us off before someone says, "Enough!"

The County is having a meeting next week, but they're not inviting the School Board. The County will want

the Mayor to flip...they expect him to flip...

 9/11/01......what will America remember?

Far more importantly, what will America learn?

You have got to be kidding me , the City of Debary is going to have a 'rememberance' of the 9/11/01 attacks ,

complete with entertainment this Sunday....why?  As if entertainment has something to do with tragedy

Well .....someone has to say it......you can remember all ya want, you can flag wave and pray all you want, the

damage has been done, those unfortunate people are dead and there is not one thing we can really do about it

except ........LEARN!!

All this memorializing, entertainment and flag waving amounts to a big bucket of nothing...UNLESS you really want

to learn from the sad terrible events of 9/11/01.

I'll tell you some of what I learned:

We need to remember ,not only those innocent people that died in the USA during 9/11/01 but we need to

remember the tens of thousands of innocent people our military killed in the mideast in our attempt to get REVENGE.

I am not talking about the terrorists, just the innocent people that our nation has slaughtered in Afghanistan and

IRAQ that were in the way of our bloody ugly REVENGE.

We need to remember the Dept of Defense, CIA,NSA,FBI , etc. all failed to do their job of defending this country

and no one has been held accountable for that negligence.

We need to remember we started another worthless dangerous bureaucarcy called the Dept of Homeland Security

...when that is exactly what the Dept of Defense is supposed to be doing. The DOD is supposed to defend the

homeland...HELLO! It is their job and they failed.

We need to remember this nation's government  has been meddling in the affairs of every nation on earth,

which, like it or not, has a cost. The cost is, you make enemies that you better be prepared to deal with we were

not prepared and still are not.

We need to remember the attacks of 9/11/01 were a gambit, a sacrifice to lead our foolish mindless government

into a TRAP. We are still in the trap, it is called the War in Afghanistan. Osama Bin Laden was quoted as saying .....

that was the point of the attacks. We even threw in a bonus war in IRAQ to add to our foolishness reaction.

We need to remember our 'revenge minded' efforts at war have backfired totally with the death of over 6000 US

soldiers and the cost of at LEAST five (5) TRILLION dollars in borrowed money.

We need to remember we did  EXACTLY what Osama Bin Laden wanted...get involved in a war in his sandbox at

$2 billion a week plus corpses....Like it or not, the great SUPERPOWER USA is still shakin in it's boots after those attacks.

Al Queda has no Navy, Airforce, Marine or Army to defeat, which makes  most of our priceless military toys

worthless in this type war.  Our military efforts have created just as many terrorists as it has destroyed...in the

long run.

We cannot stay in these wars forever and we are hurting our COUNTRY far more than they are hurting our enemy.

Saddam Hussain and Osama Bin Laden are dead...too bad it does not matter because we have fallen on our

own sword. We have accomplished little if nothing because we will simply be outlasted as we were in Vietnam.

Our government is so mindless and corrupt that it never learns the lessons of war yet asks our soldiers to

sacrifice for their country.   They are sacrificing and dying for the mistakes and illusions of their government, not

for their country.   It feels better when you say someone died for their country when in fact it was their

government's orders that got em killed.

Al Queda can never defeat the USA...but we can defeat ourselves through the weight and folly of our government's

foolish military blundering and that is exactly what is happening.

We need to remember this nation was formed as a result of the American people outlasting the British in an

expensive overseas war that lasted 8 years.     HELLO!!! ....remind you of anything? We are in that same situation

as the British, being defeated by our own efforts and folly in an expensive war overseas that we cannot ever win by

any measure.

Our military claims we are making PROGRESS, what do you expect them to say , war is their business... just look

at the cost.   Just look at the cost ,  followed by the bitter taste of regret because we cannot stay in these ongoing

FIASCOS forever...we are BROKE now!

Go wave your flags , say your prayers and memoralize our nation as it wallows, caught in a Mid Eastern war trap

that is choking the life out of THIS NATION.

We need to remember we are beating ourselves on every level,  financially, militarily  and spirtitually as we have

been choking on our own arrogance and revenge since 9/11/01.   The poison of our own revenge will be mixed with

the taste of our own regret.

Remember this, these wars will have no winners...none at all, just survivors and the bitter taste of regret.

Our government's reaction to the events of 9/11/01 are ten times more tragic and destructive than anything

that happened on 9/11/01 ...remember that, it will be in the history books .

Thank You

M Culligan

September 13th is the primary election.  Not many people are aware that we are having a primary because the

mayor and council member Hunt actually ran unchallenged and therefore are automatically re instated.  However

there are four candidates for seat #4 being vacated by Jack Lenzen.  With this knowledge I am very very concerned.

As a citizen of Debary I am having difficulty understanding why our mayor would go and speak in front of a current

sitting council persons HOA. (sunshine law???)  In addition this council person collected signatures for the mayor for

his re election campaign when he was running un opposed.  The mayor also calls this council person by his 'first name'

in council meetings (always before it was Mr. This or Mr. That)  And if that is not enough to be concerned about I find

one of the candidates, who has never done anything for Debary (of record) owns a business in our neighboring city,

Orange City. Then the icing on the cake is he is backed by a sitting council man who is chummy with the major.

(Everyone feel comfortable so far???) While this election may not seem important it is really the opposite.  This election

and then the full election in November is very important and for all of those that have been following the mood

of the council. You will surely understand how important having an unbiased voice can be. Most of the candidates

are running on their own accomplishments and their own merit but not all.  One or more of the candidates are

running on their close connection to council representatives currently sitting on the council.  That makes this election

very very important and could possibly put the former 'Marks Brothers' to shame.  They were only two and everyone

hollered.  You are subjecting yourself to THREE so be careful. The out come of this election is going to leave the citizens

of Debary one of two choices. You will either have 3 council representatives that will agree on everything and run

things they way 'they want' or you will have a chance for equality with at least two being objective and then having

one tie breaking vote which is the way it should be for complete representation of the entire city. To make an informed

decision you should consider who has done volunteer work for the city and who has not.  Who have shown their

commitment to the City of Debary and who have not. It literally makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck to

think that someone can get elected because of friendship and not on merit.  I ask all the citizens of Debary to not

be lazy and make your own decision based on your research.  Do not take the recommendation of others as you

will surely lose your vote in the long run.

Patricia Christian.  Last I heard that got voted down.  It originated from Altamonte Springs.

Here is part of the article

By Keith Laing
The News Service Florida

October 7, 2010

Sen. Lee Constantine, R-Altamonte Springs, declined to comment Tuesday because he will

not be in the Legislature next year after facing term-limits. Constantine has said he considered

SB 550 to be a capstone of his career in the Legislature and lawmakers presented him with a

framed copy of the bill after he made farewell remarks on the floor of the Senate this year.

The most recent article I could find was October 2010

Bob Waldorf

9/4:

Florida Legislature passed SB 550 in 2010 requiring mandatory septic tank inspections every five years. This is an outrage. Is there nto a petition we residents of Florida can sign in protest? If so please let us know so we can acquire one.

Patricia Christian

8/30:

Thanks to R.Dwyer & Mr Tabor for correcting Shirley H. on how much the City of Debary gets

from the taxpayers.   It is all itemized in the tax bill that comes from the County of Volusia. I read

the tax bill and just can't wait to pay for crap I never use or voted for, especially the ECHO free

money giveaways.

Shirley knows that Springview has no spring view and Parkview has no park view, both have

a view of tract housing , they are Debary developers answer to  Levittown, NY.   Many can remember

these areas when they were inhabited by deer, bear, fox and rattlesnakes, well at least some

rattlesnakes are still there.

Another thanks  for Rich Gailey's comments of 8/23........ya gotta scroll back and read what he

said.   Really ya gotta, his comments are rich alright.

I think he actually associates Christianity and our country with having moral principles, as if

to say the USA is on the moral 'high road'! He claims christians sacrificed so much and started this

nation....what a crock, our ancestors took this land at gunpoint.

Rich forgets we stole this country, every square inch from sea to shining sea.  We bought,

blasted, bullied and bulldozed every person, nation, tribe or obstacle  in our way, then proclaimed

the lie that GOD Blesses America.   God blessed the original land the american people currently

control..perhaps.  Remember the principal of 'Manifest Destiny'..Rich? Remember the treaties we

broke and the wars we started...Rich?

The USA is a great nation , compared to North Korea, Somalia or Afghanistan and if the

Communist Chinese keep lending us money we will continue to be great.   Sure we are great,

as long as we do not run out of lies and illusions about how great we are.

I recently heard a person that claims to be a christian, explain the a church steeple was

intended to draw your eyes skyward towards heaven.

The USA has filled that heavenly sky with spy sattelites, helicopter gunships, Predator Drones,

missles , B-1's,B-2s,B52's, B29s,B17s,  etc ...all in the name of God and Country !  God Blesses

America...sure Rich........but only as long as it is tax deductable ,politically correct or militarily dominant.

The 10th anniversary of 9/11/01 is coming up Rich , America can remember when they were

attacked and forget how many nations we bombed and attacked and why.

Sure...RICH G.....God Blesses America in the present times......but only as long as we can keep

borrowing from the future times.

Wow!!! DeBary has a wailing wall. I guess I live a sheltered life, because I didn't know that.

Some place where you can throw a bucket horse squeezing
or bull squeezings and even an occasional bucket of good stuff and hope somthing sticks. Kudos

to Mr Ed Sullivan on his article on current zoning. I owned a service station for over 30 years. One

thing that I know is that people will travel a lot more than a quarter mile for good service, cheap gas,

and somtimes even quality. There is another location in close proximity that could serve Race Trac

quite well. I'm not on the city council. but if I was,I would have voted to deny any zoning changes.

The back of my neck still bristles when I think of that eminent domain issue in Connecticut. They took

the family to the Supreme Court, took his property, demolished it, than with a sadistic twist of fate,

the developer backed away from the project. Shame on some council members.

I'm all for economic development, and in a lot of cases the "Build It and They Will Come" philosophy

can work. I'm not a fan of Sun Rail for a few reasons.

The legacy transportation network in Florida was built around vehicles carrying people to where they

need to go, whether for work, shopping, or play. As a result, places where people might want to go

to recreate, work, or shop are scattered around, as are the places people live. There's not one central

place where people live, work, or play...

One might somewhat successfully argue that providing a connection to the new basketball arena

area offers connections to cultural and sporting events, as well as potentially bringing people to the

downtown Orlando area as it attempts to revitalize.

A similar attempt to use existing rail Right-Of-Way for commuter purposes on the east coast of Florida,

known as the Tri-Rail project. The vision was to connect West Palm Beach, and the City of Miami

together and 'reduce traffic congestion' on the highway, most notably I-95, in that corridor.

The results: $61M in annual capital and operating costs vs $11M in annual revenues... Not a pretty

picture...

See the following link: http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/08/23/2372118/report-state-in-secret-talks-to.html#ixzz1Vww0BR5m

Whatever happened to creating a real business case and starting a business off by providing

products and services that people want or need at a price they can afford. Increasing fares on

Tri-Rail (the service area cuts through one of the largest populated areas in Florida) would certainly

drive people away. Then the government (aka, you and I) are left with stranded assets and paying

our taxes to subsidize a huge tax burder. The Feds haven't done much better with AmTrak, especially

with customer service: http://amtrak.pissedconsumer.com/. One is left to wonder why there are no

news articles written to document the financial condition of AmTrak either.

Not that I'm a pessimist regarding 'mass transit'. I grew up in Pittsburgh with it's large network of

bus and trolley service. I've traveled New York City and Long Island trains, buses, and subways,

and been on subways and trains in London and Paris and Chicago.

No doubt that when a route is located adjacent to locations where large amounts of the population

can take advantage of public transportation, everyone wins. It's just not clear that we have a

winning formula in our case. Not only that, but the residents of the City of Debary will be paying

for a train station that we may not be able to dig ourselves out from financially, let alone use consistently.

We need to contact city, county, schoolboard members regarding redistricting.  Redistricting

determines our representation and our say in local issues.  Redistricting determines who we

can vote and direct our concerns on local issues for school board and city and county issues.

The map that had the most consensus support was map 10. which would have put all of Debary

in with communities like Orange City, Deland and unicorporated county.  Cities that are close to

the same size of us and we have more in common (Mainly west side I/4 communities along St. John River).

However, at the last redistricting meeting Lake Helen packed the council because they did not want to be lumped

in with Deltona and now the

committee which is chaired by CO. CM Pat Northey and SB member Diane Smith and others is

seriously considering map 11 which would lump us in with Deltona and move Lake Helen in with

the West side Communities at our expense.  We need to contact our local Debary, County, School

Board and other municipalities if you have time to voice your concerns.  If you do nothing you

support being lumped in with a community of more than 86k people vs. ours of just over 19k.

You do the math.  Again, I do not know that this list has all of our neighborhood emails so please forward to others.

8/26:

I was very interested in what the out come of the Race Trac gas station would be.

Unfortunately I was out of town for a while but had the opportunity to watch the

Council meeting not once but twice. What I noticed was the Mayor had many private

conversations with the City Attorney. This is in violation of the States Sunshine Laws,

a big NO NO. Will any Council Member speak up and mention this infringement at the next meeting?

I think not. Do any of them know the rules?

Bill Bevins

From Norm: Talking to the lawyer during a meeting is not a violation of Sunshine Law. It's a poor practice

and the Race Trac meeting was the most poorly run meeting I've ever seen and I've been watching

meetings since the Springof '04. There is no basic understanding of Robert's Rules of Order

by any member of this Council - period. Wanting discussions with no second on a motion by TWO

Council members. The Mayor allowing CM Koval's wife to deliver a Public Service Announcement

about the importance of attending meetings during a public hearing - he never had a problem swinging

that gavel to shut me or the rest of the Council up.

After 4 hours of testimony, CM Carson spoke for 2 and a half minutes offering no basis of denial - I defy

anyone to listen to what he said and explain to me what he said - this includes CM Carson.

But hey, that was a hell of a fireworks show, wasn't it? And Larry the Cable Guy has his key to the City.

And now we're going to have remote control cars in our Nature Park.

Response to Mr. Marks.  Thank you.  As Vice Chairman of the current Street Scape Committee I want

to let you know you are correct.  The current council is weak and it will get weaker and more one

sided if one of the current members gets his 'friend' voted in.  Because I am running for election I

will not name names but anyone paying attention can figure it out.

In all fairness I accept that I have been the 'clog in the wheel' from getting more bus shelters.

The bus shelter design was my first agenda when I got on the committee and I caused the committee

to re address the original design. I have faith that the new and updated design will be widely accepted

by the citizens but of course we still have to get council approval.

As a former council person you know how slow the wheels turn but the good news is we have a

committed sponsor and I am sure we will have a resoIution on the bus shelters in the near future

and citizens can expect to see new shelters being built before the end of this year.  I also accept

responsibility for not addressing the other issues.  I have found it very difficult to get a quorum to

our meetings and because of that we have had to skip some of the monthly sessions.  It is even

harder to get public participation but I will keep trying.

Street Scape meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month at city hall and everyone is invited. As far as

what I know about the signs.  Code enforcement, Mr. David Hooker, now operates on 'complaints only'

so when folks see a violation it is now up to them to call and complain. 386-668-2040

Bob Waldorf

**********************************

I do agree with Mr. Marks comments about the signs in the city. however, I do have to take him

to task about his comment, "It seems they have not passed an ordinance that spells out specific

rules as to what is allowed and what is not allowed."

Where were you the past three years when you were on the council, you did not pass any specific

rules either.

Henry Tabor

8/25:

Oops, sorry! Guess I should have checked my Notice of Proposed Property Taxes

before I spoke/wrote. 'Scuse me ... munch, munch, munch ... gulp! There, that's done

(I hate eating crow). Actually, the City of Debary gets approximately $15,000 to $16,000

from Park View subdivision.

Shirley Horchler

8/24:

The $140,000 in taxes the author claims collected by the City is grossly overstated by 90%.

According to the Volusia County Property Appraiser's web site, the total tax bill on the subject

property was $1,731, of which only $184.84 were the Ad Valorem taxes levied by the City. The

total Ad Valorem City taxes levied for the community would be approximately $15,156 assuming

the count of 82 is correct and the average City tax is about $184. There is a big difference between

$140,000 and $15,000.

R. Dwyer

************

Shirly needs to check her math. You may pay $1,700 a year in taxes, however, the school board

gets most of it, then the county, hospital and my favorite, St Johns Water management. The city

might get $200 a year in taxes which would be about $16,400 for your sub-division, not $140,000.

Henry Tabor

*****************************

Hey why is anyone even discussing the taxes.  Debary has

so much money they can turn down over $100,000 year from a 'new' business.  So everyone

stop the whining.  I am sure that the drug rehab center that is considering the foreclosed houses

will have more than 17 people working there (???) and will surely pay more in sales tax than $100.000

.............or will they?  What sales tax will they pay? What sales tax would any 'office type' business pay?

Oopsss....guess all the 'I don't want it' never thought of that but then I don't think they really had any

logic thought anyway.  Let's see.  If all of the city would have gotten $100,000 in sales tax revenue from

the Race Trac but the 79 or so home owners did not want it then maybe we should tax them the amount

they kept from the city that would have benefited others.  I mean after all they were spouting off about

'how it would affect them' so it is only fair they accept the responsibility of how their whining affected

everyone else.  Sounds fair to me.

Debra H.

8/23:

I was not ignoring the comments posted last week, I was out of the country with little internet access. I was in the type of place Mort would apparently love to live, a place where you have no govt. social programs (which I agree), no income tax (also agree), no zoning reguirements (Casino's, brothels, family housing, supermarkets, schools, livestock, hookers all in the same neighborhoods on the main streets. I was in the Dominican Republic. I do not believe that is the scenario that plays out with unfettered capitalism, that is what occurs when you do not have a country founded on the Moral Principals that this country was founded on. You know Mort the Christians who were willing to put their lives and fortunes on the line to start this country. What we have now is the result of all the people who have voted since the 1930's, especially the Pinko Commie Hippee freaks from the 1960's who quadrupled down on the insanity of social programs. The reason we have these problems today are mainly the results of elitist socialists, atheists (who hate Christians so much that they would rather look to govt. theft than Christian Charity), church organizations who gave up their historical responsibility to care for the poor to govt. agencies along with the secularists. Where did the needy get help prior to 1937??? Could all your misplaced prejudice be based on all the candidates you voted for over the years that have taken wealth out of the pockets of capitalists and redistributed to govt. bureaucrats that think they could do a better job than the early church in this country??? Capitalism only works in moral and just societies. If you do not believe me go to any Euro or non- dictatorial third world nation in the world.

Hey Culligan Man:

You say some pretty smart things, and yet you can be so mean! Yes, you struck a nerve with me by referring to my home (in Parkview) as a "suburban nightmare." What you forgot to mention in your diatribe is that every one of those homeowners in Parkview, Springview "and other zero lot line suburban nightmares ..." pay taxes, and I might add pretty hefty taxes! I believe there are 82 houses in Parkview, times (I'll make a guess) roughly $1,700 per year in taxes. That comes to just under $140,000 a year the City is getting from just one of the "suburban nighmares."

Did you forget to take your happy pill this morning?

Two facts to keep in mind:

Churches and their ancillary uses do NOT pay taxes. So no monetary profit to the City,

only use of City services.

Think about that before giving them free rein to do any activity as they please. Would you do

the same for a temple or mosque??

There is a finite amount of land available within the City limits for development of new commercial

uses. Annexation is not available as a tool for expansion ( with the exception of some limited sized parcels).

The existing undeveloped land in the City should, in my opinion,be conserved (the wise use of a resource,

not the prohibition of its use). They City has something tha developers want. Don't sell the City's limited

resource, like a whore on the street. Hold out for the best the City can get from a developer. Negociate

When Racetrac wanted to open up a gas station @ I-4 and Debary Dr.   why did not you people

YOU need to support REAL Businesses. Real businesses pay taxes and provide jobs...it is called capitalism.

They were shaking down government and businesses for money as usual.

8/16:

Debary Taxpayers,

What irony that Debary turned down a gas station named Racetrac

......what did our leaders think it would be....... a real Racetrac with horses and evil gambling? How

more commercial is there than I-4 and Dirksen?

Debary needs to grow up, this nation was built on businesses

and capitalism , not socialist programs and 'tax negative' non profit (bum) organizations.

If any  business or individual pays taxes, then all should and

fairly as possible. These, so called non-profit businesses which happen to include churches are business

and BIG BUSINESS.

The fact that citizens support  Jesus Franchises such as the

Catholic or any church/ religion is  amazing.  Every city or town  you can think of has it's tax free religious

FRANCHISE that delivers .....demogogery and wishful thinking fantasy.   Religious political/social clubs deserve

to pay their fair share in taxes just like all other non profit 'tax loop hole' joyriders.

The fact remains....if you do not like gambling....do not gamble,

if you do not like topless clubs, just do not go there.   Debary has a whole area south of Dirksen on 17-92

that needs new businesses, not empty commercial space....for lease.   Wal Mart, Outback, Casinos...

anything that works...and makes money and pays taxes.

We want to talk NIMBY......Debary is stuck with Parkview,

Springview and other zero lot line suburban nightmares moving into Debary. Those areas could have

been real businesses with real jobs or just left undeveloped.

The area south of 17-92 and Dirksen is commercial and should

be developed with businesses that EMPLOY people ...employment is a social program.

Debary needs successful proven businesses, not more empty

commercial office space or parks.

Parks are great but they do not produce real jobs, nor do

tax negative non profit corporations  that beg for government money.

Just remember as your taxes go up, all the businesses and

jobs that Debary could have had if it were not so NIMBY and  Neo-Socialist.

8/12:

Ms. Evans.  You have completely ignored what Mr. Waldorf posted about facts and yet you slam Dan Hunt.  You ignored Mort C when he points out that you should not stunt growth because you moved into an area close to an interstate.  I understand there is also a report from the city staff that says the race trac would have helped your area with storm water drainage.  You have not come up with any facts to offset the facts that were positive for the race trac.  Try and find anyone that does not live in your area that is thankful for the race trac denial.  You cannot because there is none.  Talk about the race trac being greedy for profit and yet you have been greedy for selfish reason.  Difference???

Response to Mort.

I find Mort's comments amusing and contradictory. You say you bought in Orlandia Heights so you would not have to live near commercial, yet it sounds like your vision is to live in a city with double decker casino's, racetracks and a couple of strip clubs to spice up our boring city. Sooo, why did you buy a house in DeBary and why hasn't the chamber of commerce hired you to bring your form of community development to DeBary? There are plenty of places that fit your definition of community. I bet (no pun intended) you are a guy that does not like to pay excessive taxes. You seem to be a libertarian (at least for adults, not children) and you seem like a seasoned citizen who has been able to vote for many years. Do you think social programs increase spending (I.E. need to increase taxes)? If you think our social programs increase spending then the next question to answer is what puts people on social programs? Do divorces (split houses - split incomes), gambling, porn (apparently a routine Saturday night for Mort) drugs, etc. addictions, dead beat parents or not taking care of elder parents put people on SP's. You know Mort, businesses that liven up your kinda town. Who took care of these types of people before the introduction of social programs into our country? That's right, churches. I wonder if we went back to the model before the 60's or 1937 if we might be paying lower taxes, and if you would be whining about the tax exempt status of organizations that serve our communities. This may surprise you Mort, but I would have no problem with being a libertarian if we did not have the infrastructure of destruction (confiscated money funded social programs). If we did not have SP's then all of your adult ent. loving freaks could gamble/drink/drug and self medicate yourselves to death and thin the out the heard for the rest of us who tire of hearing about you complain about churches while you support business's that increase our need for social programs. I don't know how you made it to Virginia!
with on
e foot on the brake wile the other foot was on the gas. (Mort's community philosophy)

P.S. I do enjoy your commentary Mort however I would rather live in a city with a vision for the future not a what feels good now do it mentality. We can do better.

8/10:

There is a far better site for RaceTrac. Debary Council made a wise decision turning down the rezoning request by Racetrac. The property is a prime site for professional offices that will hire our local citizens for technology, medical, professional & support jobs. Many more jobs than a mere 14 to 17 lower paying jobs RaceTrac promised. There is a superior site already zoned B-6, Interstate Commercial which allows gas stations and is only 1/4 mile away on the "Debary" side of I-4, across Dirkson from the Burger King. Shame on Dan Hunt for not having a vision for our city.

Carolyn Evans

********************************************

In answer to Rich Gailey's comments....concerning my comments.

Debary is a NIMBY community with many people that want jobs, lowers taxes and prosperity......but do not want anything commercial in their backyard. Why did these people buy or build in a commercial area or a potential commercial area to begin with? What could be more commercial than Interstate 4?

The intersections of   I-4 & Debary ave/Dirksen is a commercial area always has been since I-4 was built.  The fact that people bought near there is their problem. So are the intersections of Dirksen and 17-92 or Highbanks and 17-92.

I built in Orlandia Heights....why?? The word 'heights' plus no commercial activity anywhere near me.   People that build on low flood land and or next to I-4 get what they deserve...that is just the way it is.  Many of the citizens never want to take responsibility for the fact that they bought in the wrong places.

As far as your daugther's speech, I never heard it , I was in Norfolk Va. and was not going to make a 1400 mile round trip.   But I am glad you brought that subject up because people often invoke their right to use children for political or economic puroses.

How can you say no to the children they are our future! LOL....  No child bought the property you are currently stuck with, perhaps you bought it and need to take responsibility.

Invoking  children!!   That is really old common politics, to play on the sympathy of the crowd.

Children cannot vote or pay taxes......and should not be used for political objectives.....that is the way I figure it anyway.

Again, most of our silly city council listened to the minority group of loud DEBARY NIMBY whiners and ignored the basic concepts of capitalism and free enterprise and turned away another commercial opprotunity.

Actually I would like to see I-4 and Dirksen packed with commerce....why, because it deserves commerce because it IS a commercial area if there ever was.

When it comes to Dirksen and 17-92 it should have 3 double decker Casinos a racetrack and a couple of topless clubs to spice up the boring sluggish Debary community for good.

Debary has enough 'tax freeloader' churches and non profits bum businesses, we need businesses that will make a buck and write some paychecks.

Morton C.

Regardless of how many people would be helped or hurt by this development, you have to be aware of the current zoning and the purpose of the zoning classifications as stated in the DeBary Code of ordinances Sec. 3-106. B-9 General Office Classification.
(a) Purpose and intent. The purpose and intent of the B-9 classification is to provide areas for general office use. It is intended that this classification apply to suitable properties which are situated in urban areas to provide a transitional area between residential development and more intensive land uses.

Transitional Area. That alone explicitly precludes a change to intense commercial. It would create a contition exactly opposed to the intention of the current zoning. Citizens should not be ambivalent to this kind of blatant abuse.

There's a difference between promoting growth and shoving it down people's throats, in direct violation of the intent of the current law. Yes it is the property owner's right to ask (if they can change the law), but it is the council's right to say no. In fact it is their obligation if the requested change goes against their comprehensive plan intent and would harm its citizens.

One of the primary functions of government is to protect a minority from being steamrolled by a mob who "thought it sounded like a good idea" at the time, but really just wants to do anything that hurts "other people". Geuss what? we're all other people to someone, and we're not rolling over so one owner can get their zoning change and split with ten times what their property is worth under current rational zoning restrictions.

You want zoning changes to heavy commercial? Go buy somewhere that's not zoned for EXACTLY the opposite. Sheesh!

8/8:

I guess after going to the council meeting and sitting for hours and reading all the comments

I must make my own comment

about the City of Debary's denial of the Race Trac application. I am not commenting on their

decision but on how they arrived at it.

The hearing lasted over 4 hours. The council gave the applicant 30 minutes to present its

presentation (which lasted about 40 minutes).  It then gave the opponents time to speak

which took about 3 of those four hours.  Many of the opponents said the same thing but using a

different time span

of how long they lived in the area and why they moved there.  There were about 5 speakers that

gave what they said were facts.

But were they facts or emotion?  One of the speakers, Carolyn Evans, said she drove all around

and could not find a Race Trac with a wall as proposed by the applicant.  She was right.  They have

never designed such a store and the council was told this would be the first of its kind.  At 3:16 into

the council meeting she said, ''because the Race Trac does not build in residential areas''.

Apparently Ms. Evans missed two Race Trac operations in Apopka. One on Highway 436 in front of

Hector Gonzalez who just recently bought his home at 246 Lake Cortez who does not have a problem

with the Race Trac and thinks it is convenient.  I could not find anyone home at 251 or 303 which are

also right behind the Race Trac on Highway 436.  Or what about the folks who live in Error Estates on 441 in Apopka.

I found those houses to be about 25 feet from the back of the Race Trac building and the only buffer any

of those houses have are shrubbery.  Mr. Harry Senior who was walking in the neighborhood said the Race Trac

had been built about 3 or 4 years ago which was a long time after the houses in Error Estates.  According to

Mr. Harry Senior nothing has changed.  Please, don't say we cannot compare Debary to Appoka because many

wanted to compare it to Atlantic City when the Debary Downs was an issue. (see its hard to be a hypocrite) So

my issue here is how did the council arrive at their decision that was fair to all the citizens of Debary?  It amazes

me that the council members can take hours to knock on doors while campaigning but can't take any time to gather

their own facts.  This decision should have been fact based with emotion only a slight part of the decision.

Facts because of the economic impact to the City. Obviously they had time to visit their supporters to cement

relationships but did they really vote for all the citizens of Debary?  I believe that all the citizens of Debary are

entitled to a council member that will do his or her homework and not vote out of emotion or to satisfy the few.

Who knows....maybe they made a good decision and all the citizens approve...........but the fact is we don't know

because they didn't do their homework.

It never ceases to amaze me when supposedly sane people trip all over themselves to cheerlead for any size, shape or form of building in any place wrong enough for it. In fact, the wronger (!) the better, for some.
Case in point: A hired gun from Sarasota comes to town, armed with bogus "facts" and a posse of salivating biostitutes and other "experts." Purpose: to change residents' zoning laws to suit themselves, make money, and then get out of town before sunset and before the banks close. Wait a minute! What's that I hear? uh-oh, its the "G" word. You know:

G ive us what we want, when we want it. Now.
R esidents don't understand how good this will be for them.
O ur experts say there won't be any problems.
W whatever is on the property now -- this will be better.
T his is just the first step. All problems will be addressed later.
H ow can you pass up (jobs/taxes/beauty/housing/commercial - take your pick)?

In conclusion, I have a few words on the subject of changing the public's zoning/land use laws for no reason other than private profit:

I love hearing about "The Nimby" card. Come clean, how many of you have a gas station, let alone a Race Trac station in your back yard? Ask your spouse what they would think. I am a proud father that my daughter was able to stand up in a room full of 100 people and address her unscripted concerns to the city council. Maybe you should have showed up instead of waiting for decision to be made and then pipe up on a faceless blog taking shots at little girls.
Now onto the real issue at hand, the vision for Debary. I have lakefront property next to a interstate that I would love to sell to a major hotel chain and cash out. However, my neighbors would then be saddled with this monstrosity next door. That is why we have zoning laws, specifically transitional zoning laws designed to protect neighborhoods. Maybe if Debra understood why the good lord gave her 2 ears, 2 eyes and 1 mouth she would then understand why she does not have a RT or hotel or poker room in her back yard. On to the money, Mort (who I usually agree with) your source is the News Journal/sales pitch of RT. Come on, do you really believe News Journal did extensive research into the validity of their claims? If you do I have some swamp land next door for you to buy for $1.4 mill. Do you believe the owner of RT is going to up and move to DeBary? Because that is the only way any of the profits would find its way to DeBary. The only income generated for DeBary wouild be the min. wage jobs that RT creates. What about what won't be there? All the professional level jobs that have been there the past 30 years that pay more than min. wage, and they live and profit in the area. Yes, builders have had a tough time the past few years but that does not mean we have to sell out to the first business that comes down the pipeline. What about the new opportunity to get a diversified professional business base like CPA, Law, Investment, etc. which is what most of the current zoning supports. None of that is there if you have a RT gas station. When I asked the expensive sales team RT had at the meeting the same question I asked you, none of them replied in their rebuttal that they live with a RT in their back yard, and they were the only ones in that room getting a big fat check from RT, which Debary would never see.

8/6:

Debary taxpayers,

Our anti business city council recently yeilded to the NIMBY forces of

the community by screwing up another business opprotunity for Debary.

The proposed RaceTrac gas stationed would have yielded a

potential $1.4 M in tax revenues for Debary according to a recent Daytona News Journal article.

This is the SAME city council that gave away $25,000 in

Debary taxpayer dollars to 'TEAM VOLUSIA' an economic developement council that is supposed to promote new business.

Only in DEBARY would you have a city council that would

give away $25,000 to promote a political EDC business  'Team Volusia' then turn down a $1.4 M tax revenue opprotunity!!!!!

Why weren't our  community leaders such as Pat Northey

and Mayor Bossy Bob Garcia promoting this opprotunity?  Shouldn't these community leaders be responsible for promoting business growth ??

Where was the West Volusia Chamber of Commerce, aren't

they supposed to support business and Commerce?

Both  Team Volusia and the West Volusia Chamber of

commerce are more worried about promoting themselves than supporting  new businessses that want to move into the community.

Think about the jobs and revenue Debary Downs and the

Racetrac gas station would have brought to the community.....when you pay your taxes next time.

Debary is a NIMBY CITY because some of our weak city

council members are afraid to offend small groups of Nimby whiners that want jobs and low

taxes yet nothing in their backyard.

 Debary Taxpayers

Here we go again Debary.....  Sandra Wilson and Pat Northey's Gateway Center

for the ARTS is getting even more taxpayer dollars. These municipal  parasites never stop

milking taxpayer dollars for their questionable political arts crusade.

The $100K they shook down from the Debary City Council

years ago was just the start. Then there was the Federal money from HUD, state money,

county money plus all they could beg from local businesses and citizens. They are shamelessly

and greedily  hitting up the taxpayers on all levels as governments on all levels are forced to

cut back on spending.

Make no mistake the  Gateway Center for the ARTS is a BUSINESS

...that is all it is. It is a special intrest group of hustlers that thrives on taxpayer dollars ...YET pays

no taxes. This group of people never stops begging , manipulating and grovelling for DOLLARS from

the innocent taxpayers.

The Gateway Center for the ARTS is a freeloading disgrace to

the community that recieved a free building, free rent, yet charges the community for everything.

It is a multimillion dollar so called non profit organizaton that could not exist without  manipulating

millions from the taxpayers ..all in the name of  arts and culture.

Our city council has a duty and responsibliltiy to stand up

against special intrest group BEGGERS and civic POLITICAL MANIPULATORS such as these type of

groups but they lack the GUTS.

The  ART of making TAXFREE money and a CULTURE of entitlement

is what we have with the Gateway Arts Center

Any city council member that votes even one penny to

Parasite organizations like  the Gateway Center for the ARTS should be considered a disgrace to

his office and an enemy to all taxpayers.

If our city leaders were responsible they would be spending

more on paying off Debary's $12 Million dollar debt that was caused by their previous irresponsibility.

The current  City of Debary council is a leaderless

irresponsible bunch of knuckleheads that have no respect for the taxpayers as they give away

taxpayer dollars to their political friends at Team Volusia , The Gateway Center, The West Volusia

7/27:

Even though the proposed new gas tanks at RaceTrac are to be of the more modern and safer

design, there is still the issue of runoff from the stations’ driveway.  Through the years, gasoline

and other automotive fluids that may have leaked on to the stations’ driveway will eventually

find it’s way to our drinking water source, even if the runoff is contained in a retention area or areas.

That will slow the process of contaminating Lake Monroe/St John’s River, but really not accomplish

much in terms of our drinking supply.

One other interesting design point – the design of the retention ponds will capture most typical

summer thunderstorms.  There’s a rating for how many inches per hour of rainfall a retention area

might hold.  If we get a tropical system or two through here and the ground is already saturated

and the retention area is already full, whatever has accumulated in the bottom of the retention

area (hydrocarbon sludges etc) may end up getting flushed into the lake.

Hey George here is a message from Bob 'The Sky is falling' Waldorf.  Any comments? http://www.snopes.com/politics/taxes/debtfree.asp   Don't forget George about the 3% sales tax on selling your house beginning 2013.  So with all these taxes proposed on US you don't find it scary that our government is giving away money to others?  Me - I don't mind taxes for US but I don't like taxes on US when the money is spent on others but needed here at home.  Call it the 'sky is falling' or just ignore to entire issue.  Most people close their eyes and ignore it.  Not me.

Bob Waldorf

I guess whether you think the 'sky is falling' or not depends on how you think our government is handling its power.
Dan Hunt is a good council person and a good union man.  Wonder what he thinks of this?  You know sometimes
good people in a union cannot see the forest for the trees.

To POP,

A few weeks ago you asked the question “With the Kennel Club withdrawing from Orange City and Sun Rail coming to DeBary---how long will it be for gambling to resurface in our fair City?” Why wait, let’s put a card room in the Glen Abbey restaurant, have a service bar with two poles for the exotic dancers to show off their skills and for a topper a small porn movie house. Think of all the money the city can reap from taxes alone. The same thing can be done at the Debary Golf & Country Clubs real estate office. The money would just keep rolling in. Don’t like any these ideas because they may be in your neighborhood, WELL, KEEP IT OUT OF MINE!!!

7/11:

Thank you George for the acknowledgement that I am not saying - that 'they ' are coming to Debary.  My concern is that Federal government has too many USA CITIZENS that need help, the budget is out of control and we can find $20.3 million to give to others outside this country whether it be the United Nations or whoever.   Our National budget is out of control or didn't you know that?  Maybe I said it wrong but let's not mix words with reality. Even my 'chill pill' can't sallow that one.
George I am American, first and for most, a freedom lover, why is that wrong?  I believe in moral responsibility and taking care of 'ours' before we take of 'theirs'. Why is that wrong?  Maybe I am BUSTED and maybe I don't get it.  Explain it to me please so I will understand.  After that lets talk about the Gateway Center - that is closer to home.

Bob Waldorf

7/8:

Greetings Bob, hope you had a happy and safe 4th of July. Your points are well taken. My point was to say that we aren't losing anything at a rapid pace, and certainly not our country. Giving 20 Million to refugees doesn't make us ignorant, and it doesn't make us appeasers.
Just take a chill pill Bob, no need to get all backed up over a generous donation to those in need.

7/1:

Mr Fincher,

As the arts community gorges itself on taxpayer money , I wonder why the taxpayers owe the arts community one penny of tax money.

If the ARTS is so popular why can't it stand on its own 2 feet instead of constantly manipulating  for taxpayer dollars?

I suppose the fact that   Sandra Wilson of the Gateway Center for the ARTS happens to be on the Volusia Cultural Council is not a conflict of intrests in the VCC grants giveaway scheduled for July 12th 2011?

It is a obvilous conflict of intrests and should not be allowed as Gateway is in competetion for these easy taxpayer dollars. The GCA is a money making fundraising business located in a Debary public Park and has beaten the taxpayers for millions of dollars through it's manipulation of every level of government it can.

Volusia County Council member Pat Northey is on the board of directors at the Gateway Centers for the Arts as well. This is another conflict of intrests and is not fair to the taxpayers.

The Vol.Co, County Council  has final approval for this Taxpayer local giveaway program as sitting council member  Northey is on the board of directors for a competing applicant for funds.

The fact that politicians  Sandra Wilson and Pat Northy could both potentially benefit in any way from recieving funds for Gateway from Volusia County is a disgrace to the community.

City Officials,

Why do we have a top heavy $2100 dollar a day Parks and Reccreation Dept?

Why so many people to run such an small park system? How did that Department get so big?

Do the citizens of Debary suffer from uncoordinated recreation?   If not why on earth do we need a Recreational coordinator?

This is no reflection on the person that currently has the job...but the job itself, why is government in the sports & entertainment business?

Why does Parks and REC advertise and charge for its programs, is it a business?

There are signs all over the city advertising for parks programs.....who cares? A tennis clinic , summer camp, even a sock hop ... what is next shuffleboard and Bingo?

We never had a parks system for years because we never needed one ... still do not need one.

Why should government be involved in people's sports or recreational activities?   We have too much government as it is.

Everyone complains about high taxes and too much government......yet Debary lets its government get bigger.

READ the Debary weekly report.....it is all about advertising for Parks and REC and a private freeloader  business known as the Gateway Center for the ARTS.

Do any of you people remember Gateway Park before it became the private commercial fundraising center it is today.    It was a perfectly innocent piece of land ,unmolested by the greedy claws of government.

Debary had a surplus for years, now it is $12M in debt ....GO DEBARY!   Debary politicians need to coordinate paying off that debt instead of concerning itself with entertainment ,culture and fireworks.

If the Debary City Council would quit giving money away to sleazy organizations like Team Volusia and tighten its belt on that bloated Parks and Recreation Dept. Maybe they could pay off that debt faster.

But on the other hand ...why be responsible?   Lets just have Tennis Clinics and Fireworks shows  and pass that debt on to our children.

Fireworks , Tennis Clinics ,sock hops......what are you people thinking? Is there anyone responsible in our city government?

Responsibility means not going into debt or at least being aggressive in paying it off,.

Responsibility is not fireworks shows , flea markets and giving away free advertising for non profit organizations that pocket every dime they can.

Dear Citizens:
There isn't a commuter rail line out there that makes money. Far and away, most of them are subsidized via the taxpayers.
But ask yourself this one question: Is transporting 500 people from point A to point B and back again on one electricity consuming rail car less environmentally damaging than 350 exhaust belching cars?
Of course it is. So either keep wrecking the environment and leave that selfish legacy to your grandchildren, or, grow some brass ones, and step out of your comfort zone. No time for whiners, get over yourself.
Rail Transport has high value to people that live in the 21st century, it frightens people that act like it's still 1965.

  Debary Taxpayers.

We can see most of our local Debary and County politicians are lined up in a row in favor of the $1.2 billion dollar SUNRAIL project.   They all scream JOBS! JOBS! failing to mention most of the jobs will be temporary yet the burden for paying for this railway will be permanent.  They fail to mention how our nation is drowning in debt and this project will solve nothing and never make a penny.

The main pusher for this liberal spending project is Rep. John Mica.  Congressman Mica claims to be a conservative yet he wants the taxpayers to support this liberal "welfare on rails" project.

This is a socialist railway that will never make a dime, similar to  TRI RAIL in South Florida which had to depend on taxpayer subsidies of $44 M last year.   AMTRAC, the national socialist railway system cost $1.5 Billion in taxpayer subsidies as our nation searches of way to cut spending.

You have to follow the money to understand SUNRAIL , it is all about the money and represents the false economy of government spending.  This is all money borrowed from our future by people that claim to care about the children. Why are they trying to fix a broken economy on borrowed dollars, how far can our politicians reach into the future for money to finance this liberal socialist project?

Sunrail will cost $1.2 billion the first year according to the VETO SUNRAIL website.

Of this $1.2 billion in federal funny money, CSX railway will walk away with $641 M dollars of borrowed taxpayer money.   What is the real deal between our giveaway government and CSX ,  aren't they subsidized already?

$600M is being spent on the train stations, can you imagine $600M.   It makes you wonder who owns the land that those train stations will be built on and when they purchased it.   Why do I get the feeling politically friendly developers are going to do quite well on SUNRAIL?

What will be the annual cost of operating this system?   Who will pay LONG TERM....the taxpayers will of course as the politicians and their corporate friends will be long gone as this railway requires more tax dollars.

Many supporters say SUNRAIL will relieve the traffic congestion in central Florida, of course there is an element of truth to that.    Something has to happen nationwide on our traffic problem and it will be solved by the cost of fuel , not any socilalist railway system.

Congressman John Mica owns our local politicians because he is the 'candy man' of federal giveaway dollars.   We often forget how government money is used as a tool for political control and how it migrates into private pockets.

The USA is broke and living on borrowed money, this socialist railway is just another straw on the camel's back.

The Bob Waldorf’s are the ones concerned about our sky rocketing national debit.  The Bob Waldorf’s are concerned about what government may do to Medicare and social security.  The Bob Waldorf’s care about what the last few years of government intrusion (both sides) have done to the housing market.  The Bob Waldorf’s care about the unemployment and without going on and on let me cut to the quick….The Bob Waldorf’s care that in 2013 there will be a 3.8% government sales tax for Obama Care attached to the selling of your house (boy that should help the housing market).  So George while I did not say that ‘refugees are going to take over Debary’ nor did I say they were even coming here, I do think you need to go read your own posted link or to save time I will put it here for all to read and let people make up their own mind as to what is true and not true.

Start here:

Unexpected Urgent Refugee and Migration Needs Related To Gaza

So tell me George what does that say in ‘your’ opinion?

Dear Citizens:

Bob "The Sky Is Falling" Waldorf writes to inform us of the OBAMA Administrations opening our borders to Palestinian Refugees, which magically means we now support HAMAS. SHAME ON YOU BOB! The money spent was the US contribution to a huge UN Relief Fund to help innocent citizens caught up in conflict ridden war torn countries all over the world. The Bob Waldorf's want to use this website to peddle their misinformation. Poor Bob; the Palestinian refugees are going to take over DEBARY! Oh Help Us BOB!
Although Bob hopes you don't check facts, just go to snopes.com and plug in United Nations Relief Fund USA Contribution.

You Are SO BUSTED BOB>

Whether you are an Obama fan, or not, EVERYONE IN THE U. S. Needs to know....

Something happened... H.R. 1388 was passed behind our backs. You may want to read about it. It wasn't mentioned on the news... Just went by on the ticker tape at the bottom of the CNN screen.

Obama funds $20M in tax payer dollars to immigrate Hamas Refugees to the USA.
This is the news that didn't make the headlines...
By executive order, President Barack Obama has ordered the expenditure of $20.3 million in "migration assistance" to the Palestinian refugees and "conflict victims" in Gaza.
The "presidential determination", which allows hundreds of thousands of Palestinians with ties to Hamas to resettle in the United States, was signed on January 27 and appeared in the Federal Register on February 4.

Now we Learn that he is allowing hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refuges to move to, and live in, the US at American taxpayer expense.

These important issues are being "lost" in the blinding bail-outs and "stimulation" packages.
They want to raise our national debt but cannot take of our own citizens.

Doubtful? To verify this for yourself:

Sad news is it was about our Assistant manager and her arrest for alleged DUI. What a day for Debary! We were on three news networks,as well as in the Orlando Sentinel; the News Journal; and untold times in the blogosphere.
Fell down Twice! Holy Cow! Dropped names left right and sideways in what appears to be an attempt to get off the hook. Why did she have to drop the City Of Debary's name though? What on earth was that about?
Latest word is: She's innocent! Plans to fight the charges. Hmmm; Let's see: Fell down twice; quoted as stating "She had a lot to drink", Speeding; Driving erratically. Yep, she's innocent. Sounds ludicrous to me.

Neal Donaldson

********************

I have to agree with the first response here; it's not about forgiveness, or kicking someone when they are down. Those words just cloud our judgment.
DUI is a serious charge. The comments from the arresting FHP Officer are very serious too. As if falling down twice wasn't bad enough; it is a whole other issue when you try to get off the hook by playing the "I'm a city manager" card. This speaks to ethics and integrity; both on and off the job. Whether you like it or not, being a city employee means your behavior reflects on your community. We would not tolerate this behavior or this double standard from any other employee. Miss Blissett's words at the scene of her arrest speak volumes about her. In some people's minds, it's okay to have two sets of rules: One set for the Citizens of Debary; and a separate set for Assistant Managers. As taxpayers we have a right to expect the manager to do his job. We have a right to expect city employees conduct themselves in a manner that does not bring negative publicity to our good City, nor its good name.

Greg Linfelder

6/11:

Dear Citizens of DeBary:

Last time I checked, refusal to submit to a breathe, urine, or blood test in the State of Florida triggers an automatic suspension of one's driving privileges. Can you effectively carry out your duties without a drivers license? As an assistant manager, one most likely represents the city at many functions. As taxpayers, you pay a salary for a fully functional employee to carry out the requirements of the position. How will the assistant manager travel from function to function without a drivers license? For that matter, how will she get to work? The Suspension is AUTOMATIC.

Jack Reardon

*************************************

Could happen to anyone? Yes, but driving drunk in Florida is a serious charge because we all know that this act can have devastating consequences. That's why your license states on the front that you will consent to sobriety test as directed by law enforcement. When you refuse, it triggers a suspension of your license. End of Story.
What is all the more troubling is the "Name Dropping" that took place when she was stopped. "I'm a single mother"."My ex husband is a narcotics officer." And saving the best for last: "I am an assistant city manager." This reeks of the "double standard" employed by some people who are telling us: "I want to be judged by a different set of rules." What is the message that we send when we tolerate this behavior?
Kudos to the FHP Officer for their quick thinking and their professionalism. It is nothing short of a miracle that she did not kill herself, or others.
Our behavior off the job is just as important as our competence on the job. Whether she got 3 gold stars on her performance appraisal is besides the point. All I hear is Poor Me. While having a field sobriety test administered: Fell down twice, acknowledged having had "a lot to drink", refused blood test, and tried to invoke the city of Debary assistant city manager clause to get off the hook.

Debary Taxpayers,

The Deland Beacon apparently has not chosen to publish my answer to an article concerning The Gateway Center for the Arts sent in by Shirley Marshall on May 30th 2011.

Shirley claims in her Beacon Letter entitled  " Another view of Gateway Center "  It is obvious I hold a great deal of resentment towards Pat Northy and the GCA".

Wrong again Shirley.... I am just trying to point out that the GCA is a burden upon the taxpayer and Pat Northy is just a common politician gaining votes by helping to steer taxpayer funding to the GCA Arts Clubhouse. Politicians often gain votes at the expense of the taxpayers by supporting projects such as the GCA because they have no respect for the taxpayers money.    Politics 101 ...I'll support your project at taxpayers expense and you support my project...getting re-elected.  Nothing ever has to be said it is just business as usual across the USA on all levels of government from sea to shining sea.

Shirley claims " The GCA did not get a free building or a free $100,000 check from the City of Debary"

The fact that the The Debary Arts League pestered the community for many years with fundraisers and garage sales does not excuse the fact that it did get a $100,000 check from the City of Debary.   Where did the City get the money....from the taxpayers, that is where Shirley.   The GCA did get a free building from the sweat of the taxpayers, from all levels of government...Federal.State,County and Municipal.   Some of the money was squeezed from local businesses and individuals as well but that building was mostly paid for from the taxpayers pockets.

Non Profit organizations are masters at getting "FREE MONEY" through  Grants, memberships and other hustles from their friends in government. The GCA,Team Volusia,The West Volusia Chamber of Commerce, the Volusia League of Cities all  *SELL MEMBERSHIPS* in their organizations....none of these businesses pay taxes yet they all enjoy taxpayer money.

Shirley boasts that The Gateway Center for the Arts claims to be all about education, arts, music, drama , creative writing, etc.   What we tend to forget is that the taxpayers are already paying for that stuff in the public school system.... why are we paying again?  Why should the taxpayers have to pick up the tab for retired people and idlers to dabble in the arts?

If the GCA is an Arts Center, why do they have a gift shop, rent space, hold fundraisers, have a flea market and church operating on their premises?   The Gateway Center for the Arts is all about FUND

RAISING for a non profit organization that pays no taxes.  Pat Northey is one of the local politicians that sits on their board of directors and has supported this Non Profit , non taxpaying business by helping the GCA recieve money from the County of Volusia.

I often hear of how people want lower taxes and less government yet the Gateway Center for the Arts is all about wasteful government spending and increased government.  All these NON -Profits get government hand outs because politicians are to weak to say no.

Why is it that the ARTS Community cannot stand on its own and continually begs for government funding?

Just want to thank DeBary POP for remembering D-Day. I showed the article that was written on POP to my grandfather who served in Europe during WWII, he became emotional when he read it. He said to me “God bless POP for remembering D_Day day”. So, I will repeat the same words that my grandfather said “God bless POP for remembering D-Day”.

6/6:

As a representative of the City of Debary Ms Blissett has shown the residents of this town her lack of judgment as to driving under the influence being impaired and risking not only her life but the lifes of others. As we all know this is a very serious charge and not to be taken lightly. Much consideration should be given to this matter by our officials of the City of Debary and not to be glossed over. Not based on work performance but on the actions that she chose to take. In closing any other elected offical or hire by the City would be judged accordingly.

Frank S.

From Norm: Our council members have nothing to do with this; this is a City Manager issue only. Council members can comment, but NO direction can be given in the firing or retaining of staff - that would violate the Charter. It's interesting how when I moved to fire CM Courson for performance issues, her hard work and friendships were cited as reasons for retention; now personal choices NOT performance issues are being cited. Other elected officials or staff will NOT, NOT be judged accordingly; they would/will be judged primarily on their "popularity" in this City. Change Blissett to Courson, you'd get one response. Change Blissett to Erickson, you would get a different response because the response would be based on personal reasons not core beliefs, the Staff Handbook, etc,. It's completely arbitrary.

Meanwhile, other actual City issues I've discussed on this website, issues that Mort, Bob Waldorf and Rich Gailey have discussed get no further response. Should Council members serve for 4 years? Should we go to one meeting a month? No response. But this...people are writing in. And that summarizes so much in this and probably other cities.

Lastly, I've had two editorials sent in via the website with no signatures and no valid email addresses. If you are that or those individual(s), please send me your name. Thanks.

The comments by Ben Arnold on Debary POP website about our assistant city manager.

Is there really a person named Ben Arnold in this community, or is it a shortened version of Benidict Arnold...famous American?

Look......Do not kick people when they are down ,  Ms Blissett may have made a serious mistake, but believe me she will suffer for it plenty already.

It is not easy being a city employee and I am sure it could drive anyone to drinking. I have already lost count of how many City Managers and Assistant managers Debary has devoured.

Municipal employees are often caught between politicians, taxpayers, businesses and various special intrest social groups, that cannot be easy.

How about some forgiveness  instead of  making it worse than it already is.

While watching the 11:00 p.m. WESH news last night, I saw that our Assistant City Manager was arrested for DUI. Seems she blew past a couple of troopers at 90 mph on I-4 then ran off into the grass while taking the DeLand exit. It was a very nice photo of her and she looks good in orange; I know this sort of thing can and does happen to the best of people, what I hope doesn't happen is for the people of DeBary to call for her to be dismissed. That would be a shame because she really has worked very hard for this city and is good at what she does.

Thanks for listening.

Fred K.

Fred, She is not all that. She needs to go. She is an embarrasement to the city. Ask anyone that goes to the florida league dinners. The only thing she does is talk trash about everyone she works for. This does not suprise me and I am pretty sure she has been in trouble before.

6/4:

The Percentages Game

From Mr. Conoley’s blog:

May, 2011, was another record breaking month…readership continues to grow exponentially!  Registrations are also growing exponentially!

What are the actual numbers? Actually, why wouldn't you print the numbers? Of course, now that the well has been poisoned, any actual numbers posted in the future won't be persuasive.

Within the state of Florida,  two cities increased their readership by + 600% or more.  They were:  1) Pompano Beach, and 2) Lady Lake.

Without actual numbers, percentages are meaningless. A 600% increase could mean it went from 0 to 6 readers. If someone tried this kind of flim-flam on you Mr. Conoley, you would be responding in exactly the same way and justified in doing so.

Lastly, what Mr. Conoley has said about Mr. Erickson: ...praising himself in order to boost a falling ego and a growing inferiority complex. ...an example of what can happen...when he begins the process of self-delusion and begins to believe that he is far more important than he really is.

And it's so sad when people act that way, isn't it Mr. Conoley? People like Erickson trying to make others think he is so important and/or his blog is widely read by so many people.

6/1:

This is one of the best I have read that reminds us of our past but also the young folks who think they invented conservation. LOVE IT

In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that she should
bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren't good for the
environment.

The woman apologized to him and explained,
"We didn't have the green thing back in my day."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today.
The former generation did not care enough to save our environment."

He was right, that generation didn't have the green thing in its day.
Back then, they returned their milk bottles,
soda bottles and beer bottles to the store.
The store sent them back to the plant to be washed
and sterilized and refilled,
so it could use the same bottles over and over.
So they really were recycled.

But they didn't have the green thing back in that customer's day.

In her day, they walked up stairs,
because they didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and
didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine
every time they had to go two blocks.

But she was right. They didn't have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they washed the baby's diapers
because they didn't have the throw-away kind.
They dried clothes on a line,
not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -
wind and solar power really did dry the clothes.
Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters,
not always brand-new clothing.

But that old lady is right, they didn't have the green thing back in her day.

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house -
not a TV in every room.
And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief,
not a screen the size of the state of Montana.
In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because
they didn't have electric machines to do everything for you.
When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail,
they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it,
not styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, they didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline
just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power.
They exercised by working so they didn't need to go to a health club
to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she's right, they didn't have the green thing back then.

They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty
instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time
they had a drink of water.
They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen,
and they replaced the razor blades in a razor
instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But they didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus
and kids rode their bikes to school or walked
instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service.
They had one electrical outlet in a room,
not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances.
And they didn't need a computerized gadget
to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space
in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks
were just because they didn't have the green thing back then? WOW!!!!!!!!!!!

What is TEAM VOLUSIA?

From what I can see, it is just another 501(c)6  tax exempt corporation.

Love the website..... It is a fully loaded sales pitch that is almost comical.

Just what we needed....more government , that is EXACTLY what Team Volusia represents.

The nieve City Council of Debary, Fl. played follow the leader as it got on board your for a $10,000 per year membership.  What do they care it is only taxpayer money.

Partnering, more aggressive leadership, seamless coordination, inclusion, engagement and collaboration, these are some of the BIG promises from Team Volusia.

I can see it now, all these high tech, high paying jobs marching right into Volusia County behind the efforts of Team Volusia...sure.

Volusia County already has an Economic Development Dept with a staff of 10 and had a budget of $2.7M for 2010.   Isn't that enough tax payer money wasted already?

What else are you guys selling, maybe some swampland in Florida?   The Volusia County Council and the Debary City Council  will fall for anything.  What do they care, it is only taxpayer money, they just give away money they never earned ........because they are politicians. Our politicians in Debary have little respect for the taxpayers money, they just hand it over to special intrest groups.

TEAM Volusia is repackaged government, that the taxpayer is stuck funding though expensive memberships that is all it is.

Your website sales pitch fails to mention, every county in the USA is in competetion for those jobs and all Team Volusia is ..is a sales pitch.

Team Volusia has great results so far, it has created a $125k per year job for its CEO and taken the business community and taxpayers for ...HOW MUCH SO FAR?

5/30:

OK Rich.  You win.  We agree on a lot of things.  Now I have said it and I will never be the same.  To top it off I am going to have to say your right - on most things in your last post except you are still comparing different areas with Debary and what you speak of in these area are not facts.  They really are not.  Yes I know because yes I lived there and yes I had a business there and what else do I have to give you to convince you I know what I am talking about instead of what I read about. I could debate that with you forever and it would be like saying potato and pototo.

We can definitely agree to disagree on this 'but' I am behind everything you said about my last post and government.  This is why I am pro freedom because I am against big government or didn't you get that from my post.  So as far as the gambling let's both sit back and catch our breath and wait until someone throws out a salvo and then we can put the gloves back on and go at it.  Until then lets worry about our representatives.  Or did you not get that??

5/29:

The awards from Florida League of Cities is nothing but a joke. Our own council members nominiate individuals for these seperate awards. It would not suprise me that Mayor Garcia nominated himself for this award.

Now he will have something else to add when I see him on the streets. "Hi I am Mayor Garcia, and a Silver Star winner from the Florida League of Cities".

Jan Taylor

5/27:

5/26/11
O.K. I will take the bait and digress from the gambling issue to defend something more important the American Capitalist. It is interesting that the two men that you mention in your last post are socialists. Dominique Strauss Kahn was running for office in France as the Socialist Party Candidate. As much as I am against our fractional reserve based banking system, at least they have to be strong armed by socialist leaning politicians under the guise of “Redlining” to force our banks to do “Subprime” lending. Subprime lending is now being re-introduced even while we are still recovering from our most recent bank bailout, in St. Louis, Mo. by the Attorney General’s office. The IMF (World Bank) which DSK runs lends American tax payer money to third world nations who default on the loans, then refinances the loans to these same countries that have no means to pay back. This is all done to expand the money supply which increases inflation and reduces the value of our dollars. You could say DSK is the ultimate socialist.

I personally do not understand why people are mad at the Manhattan Socialist Bernie Madoff the former Chairman of NASDAQ. All he did was scam people out of money they “chose” to invest with him out of vanity by being with “Bernie”. All he did was pattern his ponzi scheme after the worlds largest, social security. We do not have the option to “choose” to participate in the SS scheme. If we do not pay our payroll taxes into this system they send us to jail. SS will fall apart just like Bernies, and all of the Euro systems. I do not condone what Bernie did, however it is not nearly at egregious as what the federal government is forcing on us.

To bring this back to gambling and our community, there are three streets that affect our lives each day, Wall Street (socialists posing as capitalists in collusion with FED), Main Street (true capitalist businessmen in communities all over this country like those on 17-92) and your street (the one YOU live on). Socialists by nature want control by any means possible which is why they have built the infrastructure in this country and the world. What they need to do is make more people dependent on it by tripping up the people who work and live on the Main Streets and Your Streets of this country. The question for me is what are our local elected leaders going to do regarding our “Main Street” which will affect the “Our Streets” in Debary. Are they going to bring a business that has destroyed the streets of so many communities throughout our country such as Fern Park/Casselberry, Daytona, Miramar, Atlantic City, etc.

Rich Gailey

5/25:

The residents of Debary just got a big slap in the face and will never admit it.  While Daytona Beach Kennel club was busy helping defeat the gambling issue in Debary years ago they were secretly hanging on to their private agenda.  Now it is out in the open according to DBNJ.  The Kennel Club is going to open their own gambling establishment in Orange City. Hahaha.  (jobs - revenue) and how far do you think it is from Highbanks and 17-92 to Dirksen or Highbanks and 17-92 to Enterprise.  Is the difference really enough to justify losing jobs and revenue??  So while they (the Kennel Club)was helping stop the Debary Downs they were actually holding on to their own license.

But you can't discuss logic with people that have none even if it is approving a gambling entity to sponsor an event at the Gateway Center (a non profit organization that has tons of money sitting in it back pocket).  Smart people make smart decision and do not let emotion get involved - Rich remember the comment you made about me. So not to make a mistake again Rich I am referring to the smart people of the Daytona Beach Kennel Club not making emotional decision only business decision 'like I was referring too'.  And while I am addressing comments made by Rich he needs to know I never said 'Poor' .......I said less fortunate....like in State of Florida driving restrictions !!!!

But Rich I do thank you for addressing the freedom issue but when was the last time a businessman that owned an adult entertainment establishment accused of wrong doing?  25 years ago?  Me?  But what about the guy in New York Bernie Madoff or the most recent, charged with a sex crime, Dominque Strauss Kahn and he did NOT own a gambling or adult business he only controlled 'our' money.  And let's don't forget one fact -- I don't care -- because it does not matter to me except for the freedom of choice issue and I even gave into that by saying that those who don't want it have the freedom of choice to make their opinion heard.  Why is it that conservative American ideas always cause finger pointing and name calling instead of factual responses?  Why is that?  I know it is hard to debate against common sense and logic so they use ''' lame excuses ''' and even go so far as to ignore that I said the final decision would be left up to council and maybe the could even get money for the Springs. Oh well.....

There is another issue that has me fired up.  Our elected officials in Tallahassee have just been caught casting votes for member when they are not present - '' but close by'' as reported by Channel 9 news today.  Well if they are close by why can't they be there to vote?  In other words why can't they be there doing the jobs our tax dollars are paying them to do?  I worry that this country is becoming a banana republic with giving up ideas and ideals here and some there - depending on the 'likes and dislikes' of the vocal.  Anyone reading this going to do anything about the elected officials?  I am, I am writing to all of them to express my displeasure. And here, so you don't have any excuses: Alan Hays, hays.alan.web@flsentate.gov - Fred.Costello@myfloridahouse.gov - Larry.Metz@myfloridahouse.gov .  If you don't mind - don't write.

So, if anyone, or when anyone, knocks my position on the foundation of this country (FREEDOM) then you certainly have to question the motive.  If I don't like something I just don't support it but I will never try to force my opinion on others to prevent choices.  Isn't that a little selfish?

Bob Waldorf

5/20:

Wanting to protect one’s home and its property value is not a “lame excuse.” I would love to know why certain people moved to Debary in the first place. Was it for the peaceful, natural atmosphere and to get out of the rat race of the “big” city, or was it with the hope that someday they’d have a card room down the street that they could walk to and crawl home.

As for the men and women who fought for the freedom of choice, I honor and respect their sacrifices; however that particular “freedom of choice” analogy is, again, absurd! Believe me, I enjoy my cocktails and I also enjoy playing the slots while on a cruise (I’ve said this before). However, and that’s a HUGE however, NOT IN MY BACK YARD!

Try asking your neighbors, friends and other Debary residents, you would quickly discover that about 90% of the taxpayers in Debary do not want this type of development. I don’t have a problem with Debary trying to build jobs in our community, just not this type of job.

I want to go on record right now, and say that if the City Council approves this project, I will be first in line to file a lawsuit against the City. Everyone knows the majority of residents do not want this, look at the last time.

And, you know what? Who cares if the Daytona Kennel Club wants to throw a party at the Gateway Park? I don’t !!! I’ll check out the website and maybe even go … maybe I’ll see y’all there.

Mr. Waldorf has finally taken us to one of my favorite discussions “Freedom”!!! He also has introduced one of my other favorite discussions “The Poor”. I enjoy talking about the concept of freedom “in 2011”, when it is convenient for those who want to institute the instruments of control. Where were all these freedom loving people in the 1930’s when we instituted the first tool of population control (social security) or the 1960’s when we tripled down with medicare, medicaid and welfare benefits to fill out the toolbox. Now when we have all the elements of control in the toolbox all we need are victims, err recipients of government benefits (or taxpayers money). So now that the main tools are in place (ObamaCare will be phased into the toolbox) all government needs is a way to drive more nails (recipients) into the coffin of socialism (control).
Now that we have the stage set lets bring out the main character “The Poor”. (Good place to see who the real poor in the world are go to globalrichlist.com and enter what income you believe is poor, real eye opening) I know Mr. Waldorf is really a free market capitalist at heart, however, I suspect that he has been educated by the same institutional government based education system that I was, or he is trying to use the same weapon against the taxpayer as those who want to control us. I had to make a conscience decision to not let my schoolin’ get in the way of my education (Mark Twain) that my family and studies after college have provided. Mr. Waldorf had mentioned that he could drive to gambling establishments, but he is truly concerned about “The Poor” who may not be able to afford to drive. First of all he must not be aware of Votran has routes that will shuttle people over to gamble their families monies away. (which is only funded by user’s to the tune of 18%, I wonder who funds the rest? Ans. Same people who will be funding Sunrail after 7 years when the federal tax payer money goes away) Who will fund their lifestyles when all of their families money is gambled away? I will go on record as supporting a gambling facility in Debary once we bring True Freedom back to this country that existed before all of the tools of control were allowed to be imposed on us by representatives voted in by the citizens of this country over the last 80 years. Until then I do not support any adult entertainment enterprises that will create more people who do not know how to act like an adult and take personal responsibility for their lives, because adult entertainment establishments are a direct path to expanding the number of recipients of confiscated tax payer dollars.
Surely you do not believe that we have all of these gambling counseling services because there are so many gambling winners that just do not know what to do with the winnings. 5% of our population are compulsive gamblers, which means their families income is going to their addiction not their families well-being. When one income goes to gambling then eventually after divorce whatever income is left now has to support two households. (Who do you think funds the shortfall of those two households?) Divorce is one area where our country now leads the world. The same outcome occurs for all adult entertainment businesses both legal and illegal.
Certain parts of our “poor” who were targeted for “help” back in the 1950’s had a lower divorce rate than the Caucasian population at the time, after we have spent 50 years helping those poor now 70% of that community grows up without a father in the house.
Let’s not use the secular humanists weapon of the poor to bring adult entertainment venues to our community. We have already helped “The Poor” enough. It is now too late to talk about freedom with the system that currently exists to take away more freedoms form those that support this system – The American Tax Payer. Once we get to a place where the ancillary negative effects of a certain entity does not further burden the tax payer I do not see how our system can support more entities that break the backbone of our economy. Eventually Atlas will shrug.

Rich Gailey – I apologize for my verbosity. I did cut this way back believe it or not

5/18:

Debary Citizens,

Guess who one of the sponsors for the TASTE of WEST VOLUSIA EVENT being held at Gateway Park is?

The Daytona Beach Kennel Club !!!!! Which is a Gambling establishment that would have had to

compete with DEBARY DOWNS.   The Daytona Beach Kennel Club is not in WEST VOLUSIA why are they

helping fund this?

That is right, the very gambling corporation that funded the opposition to Debary Downs....remember?

It appears the Daytona Beach Kennel Club is helping fund an event in a Debary City Park...nice

gamble !

Go to  www. Taste of West Volusia .com and see for yourself. You gotta see their video!

Don't forget to save up your $15 admission fee, I am sure they have a big cash register at the

Gateway Center for the ARTS. Remember the GCA is supposed to be about the ARTS.....not just

commercial activities.

I really enjoy the debate that has been going on about the possibility of a horse track.  Mind you

I said 'possibility' of it even being brought up.  There seems to be a lot of 'all about me and mine'

instead of consideration about others.  Living 1/2 mile from something that supports job may not

be a bad thing and as far as Gemini Springs I agree that is beautiful however I will not agree that

a horse track would ruin it. If it ever gets brought up and the council decides to consider it, then

they would be the ones to issue guidelines to protect it.

Who knows, maybe people with money might give some $$ to enhance the beauty.  Maybe.  But me

---   I don't care if we have a horse track or not other than the fact that I think an American's should

have the right to chose but then of course that being said everyone has their right to chose - for it or

against it.  Just say you don't want it and stop coming up with lame excuses that make no sense.

Personally I am very lucky that I 'can' drive to Daytona, or anywhere else to gamble,  if that is what

I chose to do.  My concern is for those that cannot and are not as fortunate as I am.  What about the

men and women that fought for freedom of choice only to be told now that they are retired, and maybe

cannot drive, that they are not going to be allowed a choice because some younger person has their

own selfish agenda, or even a similar retired person who has their own agenda to prevent them from

having the choice.

It is a fact that people who don't want gambling don't approve of drinking either and both of these

are moral issues.  No one wants to admit the real reason behind opposing something so they come up

with fabrication and ridiculous comparisons. So just for the record let it be known that I, Bob Waldorf,

don't really care one way or the other if we have a horse track, a card room, a casino or whatever. -

''because I don't have to go if I don't want to''.  However I do care for what this country stands for -

freedom of choice. So instead of telling me to drive to Daytona why don't you move to a more controlled

country???

5/10:

Mr. Waldorf's comment that "there is nothing happening here and the family environment will not go away with an adult gaming facility on the far end of town" is absurd. First, I happen to live in what he calls "the far end of town." I live in a beautiful home in a nice subdivision that's only 1/2 mile from the pasture that the developer is targeting for his project. Mr. Waldorf makes that area of DeBary sound like it's the other side of the tracks for heaven's sake! One of the prettiest areas in DeBary is Gemini Springs (which I walk frequently). How do you think a development like a horse track and card room will affect the springs? It would destroy it!

Enough already! Why don't y'all that want gambling MOVE TO DAYTONA.

Shirley Horchler

From Norm: Too often CM Carson references venues or business models elsewhere that he then wants to bring DeBary. This is what was happening years ago when Mayor Rosamonda was Mayor and everything in DeBary had to be like Heathrow or Lake Mary. DeBary is a bedroom community - I don't know where this mandate comes from to change our quality of life or our small town atmosphere. Part of the problem is that too few citizens consistently give input into their community's issues and direction. I was on the Council all during the Comp Plan revisions...little to no input. The Strategic Planning Committee that thee Mayor brought to the Council only to then vote against it still is not in existence after not ONE but TWO votes of the Council to create it. This Committee of 21 people could have started the process of asking this most basic of questions: Do we want to continue our bedroom-community appearance?

5/9:

First hand knowledge is not fact it is your personal experience. That does not mean it is fact for everyone in this community, region or the world. Just because on your block there were certain types of business that does not mean that the rest of the surrounding area did not have serious problems that cost the taxpayers 10's of millions of dollars to eliminate. That does not include the 10's of millions of lost opportunity dollars the communities could not attract do to the types of businesses they allowed in the first place, back when it was a smaller area and people said that "We need something here to attract people". Are we trying to follow the path of Lake Mary, Winter springs or Casselberry, Fern park? Two of those communities are not pursuing adult entertainment businesses while the other two are trying to get rid of theirs (at high cost to tax payers).

I am not trying to make this personal, as a matter of fact you should be commended for the way you raised your children to be productive citizens and I hope to have my children grow up to be productive members of our community. However, I think it is fair to say that the people who currently live in Debary did not move here to be close to a gambling business.

We already have sort of a Norman Rockwell community with plenty of Sunshine, picturesque river with plenty of recreational opportunites, parks to hold weddings, family birthdays, little league games (sponsored by mom and pop businesses, not Chico's bail bonds). (I had to throw in the bad news bears reference) We have natural springs to swim and beaches to enjoy. We now have a variety of restaurants around Debary. We have theme parks and high end shopping all within driving distance. For those of you where that is not enough there is also plenty of low end gambling places within an easy drive and if you want to gamble with the big boys there are three airports within driving distance that can take you to any casino in the world. All I am asking is not ot have your recreational desires to be thrust upon the community I chose to live in for what it already has.

5/8:

I have one question regarding your (Mr. Waldorf - Norm) responses to Mr. Gailey. Twice I have heard you say let's make sure that everyone that votes against the issue is a registered DeBary voter. What about those who would vote in favor of it? Should the same apply to them?

C. Groh

***********************************************8

It would be naïve to think there are no social costs to the development of full-scale gambling and a horse track here in DeBary. Below is a section of the LA Times talking about Orange County California cites that were contemplating the introduction of 2 card parlors in that area”

“In Stanton, the proposal came in the form of a letter from gambling proponents seeking a study session with the City Council. Their goal is to open a card parlor on Beach Boulevard on property now being used for an indoor swap meet. This latest effort is the third attempt in the last 10 years to introduce card parlors in Stanton.

In Cypress, proponents want to place a card casino next to Los Alamitos Race Course

In the past, when casino operators have tried to get their games going in Orange County, communities have wisely told them to shuffle off elsewhere. They should do the same now.

Nothing has changed to make card parlors more attractive today, and that remains true even with tighter municipal treasuries than in the '70s and '80s.

In the past when county cities desperate for new sources of income studied the possibility of legalized gambling, they always came to the same conclusion: It was a sucker's game.

For one thing, gambling--legal or otherwise--only breeds more gambling. New York learned that when it introduced legal off-track betting and police reported that illegal betting and bookmaking increased 62%.

Local police also fear increased crime, corruption, prostitution and other problems that gambling usually causes, especially for the people who can least afford it.

And a city would be inviting all this for naught, because the studies also showed that it would cost as much to police and monitor the card clubs as a city might gain in extra revenue from the gaming tables.

In 1987 Stanton and Westminster decided not to buy into card parlors. In 1981 Stanton also rejected gambling overtures, and Anaheim closed the only card parlor that was operating in Orange County. Before that, Huntington Beach and Buena Park also said no to legalized card casinos. That's what Cypress and Stanton should do now.”

If I remember correctly, the last time this subject came up the developers were going to build the card parlor first, and then sometime “later” at an unspecified date, they would get around to the horse track and the other amenities featured in their pretty pictures. Might that “later” be “never”?

My career has dealt with a LOT of real estate development, hotels, resorts, housing, retail, restaurants, etc. One of the things most important in making choices is to see what these establishments look like after 10 years of hard use. Did the developers actually complete their build-out? Did they maintain the property? Does it still look sparking new, or is it a tired, dilapidated construct? Do they include a reinvestment plan to refurbish the property at reasonable intervals, or is it just going to age-in-place? Is there a schedule for the build-out, the refurbishing? Are there penalty clauses for not meeting those? Are they going to contribute real funds to the increased need for fire, police and other social services, or will the citizens need to pay for that? And what happens to the development if somehow they aren’t making enough money to do what they said they will? Does the city get to take it over?

Has anyone from this city actually put themselves on a plane to go see one of these developments in action? Do we even know which of the many card parlors these people own is the least profitable? (That is probably the one you want to visit.) Has anyone spoken to the city council of that town to find out how their town changed with the introduction of a place like this? How many actual jobs were created? How did their budgets need to increase to handle the fire, police, security and social services? Did crime rates increase? What happened to real estate values?

It seems to me that we need to get a whole lot “smarter” before we even vote on this again. An investment in a real fact finding commission might be worth our while if we are going to entertain the concept of cards and horses in DeBary.

JuliAnn Blam

5/4:

Ok Mr. Gailey you asked a question and I will answer.

1st.  You want everyone to believe that 'any type' of adult business (including gambling) increases crime.  Give me facts based on actual first hand knowledge.  I will even allow for 'facts' surrounding adult entertainment not just gambling establishment but will not even consider surrounding areas unless the business you are citing is the only business in the area.  Waiting..........................

2nd. Casselberry / Fern Park was not a 'poor area with low real estate value' and if fact was just the opposite.  I paid less for my 15 year old house in Debary (which is dropping rapidly because in this market there is NOTHING to attract people to come here) than I would have had to pay for the house I was renting ($1800 per month) that was 24 years old.  Another 'fact'.  So what was the difference?  Could it have been there was so much more to do in that area than in Debary?  More to do - more tax revenue.  Now come on Mr. Gailey your not so against something that 'you' are going to deny there is absolutely no benefit.  Are you?

3) Mr. Gailey states: '' I am only talking about similar types of gambling and what exists around them''. (please explain and clarify because I believe you are doing it again - making statements with no facts) Mr. Gailey goes on to state: '' Maybe we should expand bingo and Winn Dixie gambling if the demand is so intense because Mort is right''............ And then he says:  ''I do not see the ancillary problems around their specific doors''.  Mr. Gailey does acknowledge than he doesn't 'see' anything so I guess he just 'knows' it exist. How does he know that ....hmmmmmm???   Is this not another 'scare tactic' or just another non-factual statement?

I can back up what I am saying and I am doing it with pride.

You speak of 'raising a family'.  Does that mean you want 'your area' to raise your family?  I have two children.  One is a school administrator (Orange County) and the other has graduated two colleges - Full Sail (graduated Valedictorian) and Stetson (and immediately hired by Charles Schwab).  Now this is from two children that was raised around a father that owned adult entertainment businesses. So you see Mr. Gailey..........the area doesn't raise a family, the parents do no matter where they live or what they live around.

As far as why is this being brought up again.  Don't know that it is going to be brought up but maybe it might be because people, real hard working, family raising, bill paying people, understand that Debary needs something to stimulates its growth because there is nothing happening here and the family environment will not go away with an adult gaming facility on the far end of town.  Sullivan Park will not close down, nor will River City etc,  but it will bring jobs and jobs bring people and housing values go up and the city reaps revenue.  As I stated before...if it gets brought up lets make sure that everyone that voices against it is a registered Debary voter and not some outsider with special interest.  This Mr. Gailey is the real world.

Bob Waldorf

************************************************

Maybe if Mr. Waldorf could check his emotions before he reads a post he may be able to understand the words that were written. The geometry lesson would be the lines between the 1, formerly 2 dog tracks that existed on dog track/seminola and the Jai Lai Fronton (o.k., I will give it to you that your businees may have been across the street, who cares. As to the poor area and low real estate values, do you think that had anything to do with the types of legal/illegal businesses that exist in that area? Which is more common than not in areas where those types of businesses exist.

Why did you move to Debary and not buy a house in the neighborhood's that exist in the triangle close to your former business? I did not say your area was #1, can we agree that your former area definitely was one of the least desirable areas in the entire Central Florida area which is a pretty big ocean being a top 20 market. As for Mort, you can deflect to all the non-related entities you like, however, I am only talking about similar types of gambling and what exists around them. Maybe we should expand bingo and Winn Dixie gambling if the demand is so intense because Mort is right I do not see the ancillary problems around their specific doors.

Enough with the defense of the illusion of what a small amount of people want in this community. We know that what ever goes on that corner at the center of our city will define what Debary is all about. That will be Debary's identity. We know from the last time this came before the council what the community wants. I find it very interesting that none of the councilmen OPENLY CAMPAIGNED on this issue yet this is one of the first areas being addressed with the new council. I question whether the current council really is here to represent the voters of the community. The proper way to handle a community changing issue that is a high concern to the resident is to have a ballot referendum for the voters to decide. I find it interesting that the Poker room finds it more to their benefit to bring this issue back to the NEW Council where the community was overwhelmingly against the last time it was brought before the prior council. It costs the gaming companies alot of money to go through this process. I would like to know why they think they will be more successful this time.

For those of you who are afraid of opposing views maybe you should pull the covers over your head. Those who do not have a strong place to stand always go to the fear card.

We finally got Osama Bin Laden.....So....Now What?

US Forces finally extinguished Osama Bin Laden after more than 12 years of trying...so... Now What?  Considering what Bin Laden did ,he got off easy with a bullet in the head.   However does the cycle of revenge contintinue forever or will we ever be satisfied?

Do we continue to spend $2 billion per week in Afghanistan chasing Osama's ghost or do we use this small success as an opportunity to get out of these disaster wars and break the cycle of revenge?

Will  OBL's death stop the $7.5 billion AID package we have in Congress for Pakistan?   OBL has been in Pakistan for years as our troops are deployed to........ Afghanistan and IRAQ!

Our efforts to avenge the terrible events 9/11/01 have been very costly , they have set the stage for two disastrous wars that have hurt the USA far worse than the events of 9/11/01 did.

Both Saddan Hussain and Osama Bin Laden are dead yet so are 1,566 US soldiers and 875 allied soldiers  in Afghanistan .   Also 4452 US soldiers and 1,487 US contractors plus 318 coalition soldiers have died in IRAQ.  10,468 US soldiers have been wounded in IRAQ plus all that have been wounded in 10 years of war in Afghanistan.

Estimates of Iraqi civilians killed in that war go are 150,000 plus, as Americans were sold the outrageous lie that Iraq had WMD and ties to Al Queda .    Who can calculate how many Iraqi, Afghans , Americans or American Allies were killed as Osama Bin Laden watched from Pakistan?

This  so called 'war on terror ' has cost at least $1.28 Trillion in borrowed money, which, after the long term costs and interest  are added up, will total far in excess of $3 Trillion.

Our government's reaction to 9/11/01  has cost Americans dearly as we  are stuck with a  Homeland Security Dept. that amplifies the threat of terrorism to continue its own existence and funding.  The truth is the average American has a better chance of winning the lotto than being hurt by a foreign terrorist. Another $70 billion is scheduled to be spent on security for 2012 as if we had an enemy greater than ourselves.

US Special Forces did a great job in Pakistan  avenging the 9/11/01 attacks, but their success begs the question, what are we doing in IRAQ, Afghanistan and Libya?

Is our War on Terror is hurting our nation more than the terrorists?   Do the research, follow the casualties, the deaths and the debt,  follow the statistics and follow the money.  We eliminated Saddam Hussain, Osama Bin Laden and might even get Gaddafi but just look what it has cost us in the long run.   Consider the question, can we kill em all , can we afford to be at war in the mid-east forever?    Remember Osama Bin Laden is dead but he still has us doing what he wanted , in a war with no end in sight.

4/26:

To R. Gailey

When making statements get your facts correct.
#1.  My adult entertainment business (25 years ago) was next to a bank on one side, a law firm on the other side next to a Burger King. (Seminole County Judge Kenny Lester has his law firm next door).
#2.  The dog track  was across the street from a church (Northland), an oyster bar and a high school (Lyman) All still there.

I guess R. Gailey doesn't get our much because the worst area for drugs and prostitution in Central Florida is Orange Blossum Trail.  Orange County has worked on that area for years and a 'fact' is that the drugs and prostitution is on the opposite end of OBT from the adult entertainment establishments and OBT does NOT have any gambling.. The 'triangle' (as stated) in Seminole County is a very depressed housing area which unfortunately is dominated by minorities.  It is not close to the Jai Alia or the dog track.  A street name Jackson runs north and south off of Highway 436 and Pulmosa runs east and west off of Ronald Regan Blvd. 'Back then' that was the main area for drugs and prostitution and R. Gailey doesn't even know how much money and effort myself and Mr. Michael Pinter (Club Juana) gave to the county to help clean up that area (ask Capt. Jack - Seminole County CBI).  That is how I know so much about the TRUTH.  R. Gailey wants to  know how much 'family money' has been spent......etc, etc, etc.... and that leads to restricting freedom of choice.  You can't have freedom if you don't want to allow choices.  These are facts and what 'facts' did R. Gailey base his comments on?  It sure is easy to talk about something you know NOTHING about .... Isn't it R. Gailey???  I do not know a lot about any one thing but I sure know a little about a lot of things.

Debary Citizens,

Gambling is NOT coming to Debary....it is already here,  near the Dirksen/17-92  site as these pictures reveal.

Both the VFW and Moosies have had Bingo games for years , that is gambling, where are the prostitues?

The Winn Dixie and conveniences stores have the Florida Lotto, that is gambling, where are all the prostitutes?

The State of Florida , Moosies and Veterans approve of gambling ......should we all move away?

I'll tell you what happened when they approved limited gambling on the Mississippi Gulf Coast...prosperity happened, jobs happened...that is what happened.

Debary has to grow up......we need jobs and business not scare tactics from people that are afraid of their own shadow.

There are 50 non-profit organizations in Debary that pay little or no taxes ....we need less of them and more businesses that pay taxes.

Does the property that Debary Downs would be located on pay any taxes....No.  It would, if we approved Debary Downs, we could take that land and make it a tax and jobs PROVIDER.

For all the people that do not like to gamble....just do not go there.  Also stay out of the Winn Dixie, convenience stores Mooosie Lodge and VFW limited gambling establishments .....where there might be prostitutes.

The ridiculous idea that Debary Downs would be crawling with prostitutes is funny.   Security at similiar establishments such as the Daytona Kennel Club is tighter than at a police station.   Do you think that the Daytona Kennel Club or Debary Downs would put up with anything that would threaten their business such as prostitution?

Do you think the Volusia County Sheriffs Dept would put up with it?   Quit with the scare tactics they are not valid.

Debary has many older people that live on social security and do not need a job.  Do these people remember when they were younger and needed a job?   Debary citizens need to grow up, we need taxpaying and job creating businesses in this town.

To anyone that might actually give a damn, I have a question:

If World War 2 ended in 1945, why does the US government still have 53,951 US troops stationed in Germany?

We also have 32,000 US troops in Japan. 9,855 in Italy and 9,825 in the United Kingdom.

If the Korean War theoretically ended in 1954 why does the US government still have 28,500 troops still stationed there?

As a matter of fact the US has 369,000 US Troops stationed in 150 countries around the world.....the question is why?

The war is not over in IRAQ yet, that is why we still have 50,000 troops there as well,  now we are calling them 'advisers' two of them died Friday.

Afghanistan has 98,000 US troops,  Kuwait 10,000 and Qatar 8,000 US troops..... all at taxpayers expense.

The cost of the US Government's efforts to garrison and control the world by military force is one of the many reasons the US Government is broke.  Remember when the US accused the Soviet Union of trying to control other countries and install puppet governments, isn't that what we are doing?   If the old Soviets were doing the something similiar to what we are doing in Iraq,Afghanistan , Pakistan and Libya  would we accuse them of being...evil?

Meanwhile our Predator Drone aircraft killed 25 people in Pakistan yesterday.   When the relatives and friends of those that were killed find out ,will they love the USA as they bury their loved ones?? The US Government does not acknowledge our Predator attacks because the Pentagon Officials are quite frankly dishonest, who else has these aircraft?

You are paying for all this military madness while filling your gas tank or paying your tax bill. Your children will pay as well and none of us ever got to vote on it. We do get to vote for  politicians that  visit war under heavy security Rep. like John Mica, he is no friend of the troops as he supports a war they can never win.

Sen John McCain wants Predator drone attacks in Libya. He always wants war even though he knows the USA is broke.  Can the USA afford another war?  We cannot afford the ones we have, just Afghanistan is costing $2 billion per week.  Two billion a week in borrowed money...what about the intrest?

The USA helped win WW2 in 4 years , yet we could not win in Vietnam,Iraq or Afghanistan after 10 years!  You guessed it America ...we do not want to win. Our troops want to win but our corporate controlled  government does not.

Perhaps Sen John Mc Cain remembers some old expressions from the Vietnam War.

NCOs and officers used to say ........" do not knock this war, it is the only one we have"!    Those corporations profiteering from the war said..... " why should we spoil a perfectly good war with victory".   My favorite was...'War is business and business is good'.

US military  DOD and Security contractors are enjoying massive profits from all this war, remember most of those  billions of dollars never really leave the USA, they just are transfered from the US Treasury to corporate intrests.  All this in the name of freedom and democracy and peace.

Watch as the American people are conned and manipulated into another war in Libya. Our nation is at war in Iraq,Afghanistan.Pakistan and here comes Libya all in the name of PEACE?    The unfortunate thing about peace is that there is no money in it.    If we win, what will we win, the right to clean up the mess in Libya at a cost of billions more?

Shall I indirectly quote a founding father of this great nation ?   "Democracy often resembles 3 wolves and one lamb voting to see what they will have for lunch ".....Benjamin Franklin.

4/25:

I agree with Mr. Waldorf that we cannot use Miami gaming communities to compare to

what would happen in Debary. However, a better community to use for Debary would

be Seminole County that sits on the same road (17-92) in our border county. Mr. Waldorf

should be very familiar with this area since he used to own an adult entertainment

business in the middle of the gambling triangle of the two dog tracks and the Jai Lai fronton.

That area was one of the highest prostitution and drug bust areas in Central Florida. Seminole

County has been spending 10's of millions of tax payer dollars to make that a somewhat

respectable place and they still have a long way to go. How much "Family Money" was

spent in gaming facilities that could have been used to provide for their families through

tough economic times? If I wanted to live in a "gaming town" I would not have moved to

Debary to raise my family. If you want to gamble do what all the other big boys do, get in

a car or jump in a plane and go there.

R. Gailey

4/22:

I personally applaud Mr. Carson and Mr. Lenzen for having the understanding of the

economic benefit the 'horse track' would bring to Debary.  People like to holler about

crime........how about bringing some FACTS about the crime.  Easy to talk about but

hard to prove.  Besides you cannot compare what goes on in Miami to what goes on in

Orlando and cannot guarantee what goes on somewhere else that it would go on here.  If that

was true I could use that crystal ball for my own selfish reasons. Congestion would be a valid

issue and hopefully with the next go round the applicants will have that addressed.  How great

would it be to have $$$$$$$ coming in to Debary from outside the city thanks to Sunrail.  That

would be one of the best reason in the world to support the Debary Station and could possibly

be the only reason.  And do something different this next time............make everyone that

wants to voice their opposition show their license to prove they are a resident of Debary or

should we just go numb again and let Orange City and / or Daytona capture the gaming

evenue?  When I ran for council over 75% of the people I talked to wanted the 'horse track'.

Everyone needs to understand this would not be like the Daytona 'Dog Track' this would be a

valued event that would bring upscale people with money to spend.  Done in the right way

this could really put Debary on the map and I haven't even begun to think about the jobs

that would be created.  If we don't do it......then maybe, just maybe, we could get people

going to Orange City to stop in Debary and buy gas because there would be no other

reason to stop in Debary.  Sad...but true.

Bob Waldorf

From Norm: We don't know anything about what is being proposed. We don't have the

contract or application or PUD so it is premature to "be on board" with the

DeBary Downs in any capacity, I would hope, until we have the packet. Even those

individuals in favor of it, I would hope, would read the contract first before agreeing to it.

The contract I read in 2008 was not one I wanted to agree to regardless of my position on

gambling in and of itself. While we might be for gambling, perhaps what is actually being

proposed is not what we are in favor of - we won't know until we get the packet. That's why

CM Carson's remarks were premature and preclude a fair and impartial public hearing in my opinion.

4/21:

Debary Citizens,

Do you think that welfare bums have a sense of entitltement ?   They do, but what

about non profit organizational bums?

What about the 50 plus non profit, non taxpaying businesses in Debary, FL?  Many

not all, have their hands out for FREE government grant money.

They range from churchs, reading academies, child care centers to Arts Hustlers,

they all are entitled to solicit for funds from taxpaying individuals, corporations and governments

from all levels.   Many shamelessly beg and manuver money from the innocent taxpayers through

the ECHO County pork barrel, the State of Florida and the Federal Grab bag in Washington DC.

They all pay little or no taxes yet many live on government grant money

Visit the  County of Volusia ECHO website and see the taxpayer's hard earned

money being devoured by these non profit businesses.

   How about some examples;

Grant # 09-02 Trinity United Methodist CHUCH   got   $12,500 in FREE Taxpayer money
09-07 Seabreeze United Church recieved $34,628 in FREE money
09-14 City of Daytona Beach Mid Town Cultural Center  $ 600,000
09-20 MOAS- Visible Storage Center $600,000

08-18 The Ocean Center-Cultural Gallery walked away with a c

ool $3 million in the name of CULTURE!

These are just some examples of how our county goverment gives money

away, ECHO gave away $6,970,024 in 2009 alone.  Around $31 million has been GIVEN

away, FREE MONEY for non profit hustlers as the taxpayers bleed.

While citizens are losing their jobs, business and houses, the Vol. Co

ECHO grab bag of free money for so called NON-PROFITS keeps spewing taxpayers money.

One of my favorites is a the Gateway Center for the Arts formerly the

Debary Arts League

This non profit got $100,000 of Debary citizens hard earned money

during the Mayor Rosamonda era.

They also recieved  Echo Grants of $57,000 in 2010
                                                           $345,854 in 2008
                                                           $500,000 in 2007
                                                           $500,000 in 2006

Plus all the FREE GRANT  MONEY they recieved from the State of

Florida and the Federal Government  HUD grants.

Plus the Free land the got in a Debary City Park
Plus all the money they earn in their non stop fundraising and space rentals.

Debary's Gateway Park has 2 non profits soliciting support and funding,

both from the Arts Center building paid for by the taxpayers. The Heart of Christ Church

pays the non-profit Gateway Center for the ARTS for rental space to hold their services from

a taxpayer maintained city park.

Now the Gateway Center for the ARTS wants the City of Debary to

clean their bathrooms! It is on the city's agenda.  Can you imagine this selfish money

grubbing organization wanting the city to clean their bathrooms after they already got

$100K from Debary, plus years of free rent. After they got millions from the taxpayers

from the County, State and federal Government they have the nerve to want the City

to clean their stinky bathrooms. The GCA exploits the taxpayers and with the exact

same mouth claim they are improving the community?

This shameless organization of grant money welfare BUMS has

dominated the city council before and most likely will get their way again. Why,

because council members seem to forget the GCA is only a 400 member special

intrest group in a city of 18,000 residents.   The council should remember that

they have a sworn duty to DEFEND the TAXPAYING MAJORITY  against special

intrest groups and their demands on city services.

Again I would like to request that the City Council members

remember they have a duty to defend the majority of the taxpaying citizens

from any and all selfish special intrest groups and their demands upon our city.

                                                                                                            Thank You
                                                                                                             Morton Culligan

Fellow citizens,

Why do we have a church operating in a Debary City Park?

That is correct, we have a christian Church holding regular services at

Gateway Park on Sundays.  They pay for the privilege, everyone pays at the Gateway Center for the Arts.

We have a farmers market in that city park and you guessed it they pay

the GCA as well.

There was a political ....'Meet the Candidates Show' at Gateway before

the last election as well.......remember this organization is supposed to be about ARTS

and Culture not.... POLITICS , RELIGION and MONEY.

The City of Debary foolishly gave this so called non profit arts organization

$100 thousand dollars of hard earned taxpayer money, since then they have BEATEN the

taxpayers for  millions from the county, state and federal levels.

These Political Hustlers  of  400 or so citizens has dominated a city council that

is supposed to represent 18,000 people, a clear situation of the tail wagging the dog.

The GCA leaders seem more interested in the ART and Culture of hustling

a buck through politics than anything else.

What is next for the GCA fund raising money hustlers...how about slot

machines, video poker and a  card room? If the ARTS and Culture organizations are so popular

why do they always need taxpayer handouts?

Visit Gateway Park it is a true memorial to wasteful government spending

and an insult to the taxpayers on all levels.

Now , I request that all of you get on your hands and knees and go clean

the bathrooms at the Gateway Center for the ARTS, perhaps you will have to pay for the privilege.

Citizens,

PLEASE VISIT....COSTOFWAR.com.  Just look at the cost of these evil wars in the mideast as they break the

economic back of the USA.  This website shows how much these evil wars are costing on a federal, state and local level.

Then consider the body count both in our soldiers and the hundreds of thousands of civilians caught

in the evil mess.

These wars have accomplished nothing but more death ,debt and disaster

for the whole world and have increased the evil both theirs and ours.

We cannot in any shape , spin or form win ANYTHING as a result

of these wars except the bitter taste of revenge.

The fact that any politician would actually support these self defeating wars is a

disgrace, we will never win and we are hurting ourselves

far worse than the enemy.

Remember we doing EXACTLY what the enemy wants by spinning our

wheels in the desert sands at over $500M per day . These wars cost them nothing and they have no place to retreat .

Time guarentees their eventual triumph and time is not on our side as our nation spirals into insolvency.

Visit Rep John Mica's  and Sen Bill Nelson's website and see how they have

supported these wars from day #1 and continue to do so even as these wars have helped destroy our economy.

Both these politicians should be handcuffed to our troops for the duration of the war along with the rest of our elected idiots that support these mideastern disaster wars.

Today I learned another lesson.  More people know what the

new princess of England is going to wear to get married than they do about how much it is

going to cost to get our septic tanks inspected.

Oh….did you even know that was a possibility???

You watch American Idol, Entertainment tonight and all the

other worthless ‘reality shows’ and you don’t even know that this country is failing fast.  Real fast.

Do you even know the controversy over the proposed national budget?  Do you even care?

No you probably don’t because Bob only ‘rants and raves’ that is much easier to accept than

the truth.  Well let me give you some information right from one of those TV channels that you

don’t even know exist.  So have a drink, light a cigarette and ignore this fact.

Talk about fuzzy math. President Obama claims higher taxes

will account for a mere third — $1 trillion — of his proposed $3 trillion debt reduction over 12 years not counting less interest expense. Wrong.

The actual number is probably around 50 percent of $4 trillion

in savings — some $2 trillion — and could be closer to 60 percent. Instead of offering a template for a Grand CompromiseObama seems to have created a Grand Obfuscation.

This is just one example among many that shows how Obama’s

much-hyped new budget plan is actually neither new nor a budget nor a plan. To the extent that it’s even a “framework” — to grant the White House its preferred descriptor — it’s one whose ideas and goals are precariously fastened together by the chewing gum and sticky tape of rosy economic assumptions and fiscal opacity. Then again the core purpose isn’t budgetary balance but political persuasion.

Remember….people that trade freedom for security deserve

neither.  Make your voice heard before it is not to late. Don't give up on America and it won't give up on you.

To whom it may concern,

What if the "Peak Oilers" at ASPO are right?

ASPO is the Association for the Study of Peak Oil , click over to ASPO

International.com ... if you dare.

" The $140 per barrel oil prices of 3 years ago was NOT an aberration, it was

a warning"..... John B Hess of Hess Oil Inc.

In 1956 Shell Oil's senior geologist MK Hubbert predicted that US oil production

would peak in 1970 ...they  said he was crazy, maybe so but he was also 'crazy correct'.

The USA alone consumes 87.5 million barrels daily and makes up its 60% shortfall

with expensive imported oil. But when WORLD oil production peaks, where are

we going to make up the shortfall from?    We only have one 'world' last time I

counted anyway.   Oil is finite, especially cheap oil , a resource which has

made the last 110 years of economic growth and prosperity possible.

World oil production is peaking as we speak, we will not run out of oil,

just cheap oil, the very resource on which the world economy depends.

The oil game is changing, the USA is not the only 'oil super consumer' anymore

as the world oil production peaks in this decade.  Keep in mind that the world's

population/consumption has more than doubled since Mr Hubbert's prediction in 1956.

Shortly after the 'Teapot Dome' strike in Texas 100 years ago the price of a barrel of oil

was .03 cents, those were the days when the USA was the world's largest

exporter of oil.  The Teapot Dome is long gone, so is the Black Giant and many other oil fields.

So where are we getting our oil today....The Ghawar fields of Saudi Arabia where 75,000

barrels of seawater is being pumped in daily to float the oil out.

How about The Burgan Field of Kuwait or Cantarell of Mexico, the North Sea or Prudhoe Bay?

All these fields are peaked or in decline, actually the oil in an average formation is

only 50% recoverable anyway.

We have Brazil's Tupi and Carioca fields, but they are in very deep water and 'deep

water' oil ain't cheap.

The USA has the Old Bakken field of the Dakotas, but again it is expensive oil

and only became economically feasable to produce after the price of oil got

so high and the technology could reach it.

The energy contained in 'cheap oil' has made life as we know it possible and

if the 'Peak Oilers' are right we face a situation that will be unprecedented

and an economic culture shock of  unpredictable proportions. The USA may

move from a culture of disgraceful waste and energy gluttony to an era of  humble sanity.

Of course we have any number of experts that claim the US has plenty of oil,

what they do not say is that it is not 'cheap oil' but oil that is expensive

to produce, refine and deliver.  Consider the fact that the US Government

has no energy policy, just a worthless political Energy Department that has

never produced one drop of petroleum and never will.

Americans are spoiled by the prices at $3.50 a gallon, yet in Norway and the UK it

is the equivilent of $9.00 per gallon.  Cheap energy is not a birthright but

perhaps an era that is coming to a close as we have alternatives that are all

expensive and difficult.

But lets look on the bright side, if the Peak Oilers are right ,the traffic will get better

and we all could lose a little weight from some long walks and bicycle rides.

When the reality of oil field depletion and the reality of increased demand collide,

a tipping point will occur from "cheap oil" to expensive energy?  Wishful thinking

and blaming the oil companies will not fill your tank but we can all think of how

wasteful we have all been over the years.

Do the research, see what realistic  non politicians like T. Boone Pickens have to say,

he has been a geologist since 1953 and did not get to be a multi-billionaire by being

an 'unrealistic wishful thinker' or a cheap cheerleader politician.

Welcome Debary Taxpayers , to our newest war in Lybia!

It is just a 'baby war' at this point, kinda cute and cuddly, ya know the kind where we are the "Good guys" fighting the bad guys again...and  again.

This is not really a war, it is a "military operation with limited objectives" as usual, and we are going to be out in a flash....WRONG.  That is how it starts, limited objectives, then we are going to train their new police force and set up a squeaky clean faux democracy, just like we were going to do in...IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN and Vietnam.

But first the infrastucture of Lybia will be destroyed by the conflict and we will have to fix it with more federal funny money like we are doing in IRAQ and Laughnistan.

This war is a cheapie so far , only $600M of your taxpayer dollars, but of course you have to add that to the other $500M a day we are spending in our "WAR on TERROR".    Our ' war on terror 'is going about as good as our 'war on drugs' and ' war on poverty'.

We still have thousands of troops in South Korea for Christ's sake, since 1950....yet somehow we have enough taxpayer money for another WAR! What in the heck do we owe South Korea after 60 years of protecting them so they could build KIAs and Hyundias..DUH!

Maybe our super corrupt and super irresponsible government can pass another 2 week stop gap measure to keep our bogus pathetic government from running out of money AGAIN.  You know those pesky little debt ceilings we have to raise. What is the point of a debt ceiling if you keep raising it? We are actually not raising anything but we are plummeting into debt, as fast as a greased tsunami.

The USA is so rich , we can afford to garrison half  the world and turn all these Muslim countries into splendid little democracies and live happily ever after....RIGHT!

Let's watch this "baby war" and see what happens after we HELP LYBIA'S civil war turn LYBIA into a chaotic basket case that we will have to rebuild and occupy under our flag or the ridiculous NATO rag.

WAR is a heck of a lot easier to get into , than it is to get out of , as we fumble and stumble our way into another expensive mess that we cannot afford by any measure.

Mr. O'Toole is right on all counts.  I beg for an answer to his last question...If the project is dead who keeps coming up with the projections'?  Of course I have the answer. The liberal minded people who see if for immediate jobs, the ones that like the government 'giving' up money – MY MONEY.  Those are the ones that want the project while the ones that use common sense don't understand how it if financially possible. Right there is the main dividing line between liberal and conservative. Conservatives consider the future and the liberal live for today.  Well sorry....today we are not going to accept another burden to be place on our future and folks need to understand that this present mentality thinking (or not) could have a crushing affect on this country. What are people going to do on either end - take a cab?  The ONLY way this is logical is to have a monorail system in Orlando (or Tampa or both) that links to the High Speed Rail at one of its stations - then it would make sense in numerous ways.  However you are talking much much money and long long time down the road.  Maybe someday...but not today. It appears that Pat Northy is pushing ahead on stopping the driving on Daytona Beach (I just love politicians that try to fix something that is not broke).  Now here is the facts.
Two children died on Daytona Beach last year..........tragic.  Could it have been prevented?  I don't know.  Should the parents been watching the children closer?  I don't know.  But I do know it was a tragic ''' accident '''.  But why close one of the best known tourist destinations in the world because of the 'accident(s)'?
How many children (and adults) have been killed on rides at Disney? I don't know.  I do know that in most cases it had something to do with the ride opposed to Daytona and the sand (the sand did not kill anyone).  However no one is calling for the closure of Disney World.  There are miles and miles and miles of beaches in Florida where there is no driving. Why take the only area that it is allowed and stop it?  Why do that?  The desire of many should out way the wants of a few ..........especially in a FREE COUNTRY.

Bob Waldorf

We had two accidents in DeBary that were tragic. The Mayor whipped everyone up into a frenzy about speed, speeding, signs with lights and the city spent thousands on flashing lights. CM Koval pushed for rumble strips. And AFTER...AFTER the investigation was completed it was discovered that speed had nothing to do with it. Lack of visibility had nothing to do with it. Driver's error had nothing to do with it. They were accidents - this is from the investigation which I have read both. We had another accident on Ft. Florida since those two on W. Highbanks. Pehaps when the next accident happens, and one will, we should wait for the investigation to come out to identify any problems, if there are any, before we starting talking about solutions. And please don't take me to task for stating what the investigation report concludes; Instead, read the investigation reports.

Thanks Mr Parrot,

Thank you for your cooperation to update the list of churches on the City website.

As we know the  Heart of Christ Church is operating in our taxpayer funded city park system in the taxpayer funded Arts and Political Fundraising business center located in Gateway Park.

Here are some more various religious 'operations' and 501 (c)(3)  tax exempt 'operations' in our community according to the non profits section of the Melissa DATA .com website.

Of these, only the taxpayer funded Gateway Center for the Arts INC. operates, fundraises and holds political events from our city parks system.

In Orlandia Heights we have the ......Town Center Church located at 112 Lake Dr.

The World Missions Intl. Church at 100 Goddard Dr.

The Victorious Living Church INC.  at 73 Pleasant Hill Dr.

The River City Christian Church at 138 Dirksen

The LIFE Changers Fellowship INC at 474 N. Pine Meadow Dr.

The Islamic Center of Deltona is even located in Debary at 235 Caddie Ct.

The Melissa DATA website also lists 3 multi million dollar Non Profit organizations in Debary.

Who are Debary's BIG THREE multi million dollar "non profit" tax exempt businesses?

   # 1      Sunshine One Call of Florida INC.....assets $ 7,228, 765

    #2      The Reading Edge Academy INC.....assets $ 4,685.092

    #3    Gateway Center for the ARTS...assets $ 2,549,992

The assets of the Debary BIG THREE non profits is comparable to the  City of Debary's entire debt of over $15 million.

According to this website there are 46 total...non-profits in Debary,Fl 32713

I think the City of Debary should add the information about our tax free. non profit organizations on the city's website so we can understand how these corporations operate in our community.

Perhaps the City should disclose how much money  (any) alleged non profit organization is making as it fundraises, rents its building spaces and capitalises in a Debary city park.

Tax Exempt non profit organizations that exist on government grants do not contribute to the Quality of Life in Debary as they grovel. beg, fundraise and capitalise from

"ya know, a billion here and a billion there, pretty soon that adds up to be a lot of money".....the late Sen Everett Dirksen of Illinois.

Can you believe our Gov.Scott would turn down billions in federal monopoly money? Isn't it illegal to turn down borrowed federal pork barrel funny money?

Was it $2.3 billion for a 80 mile section of a bullet train or was it a $3.2 billion .08 mile section, or does it matter?

It is federal monopoly money , that will never be actually be printed anyway. All this "stimulis" money exists electronically and politically and is a cheap band aid on a nation that has serious economic issues to say the least.

While we are on the subject of federal funny money many Floridians are not aware, the Air force just awarded 'political heavyweight' Boeing Aircraft a sweet $35 billion dollar contract for a new fleet of inflight refueling tanker aircraft.

These new tankers will refuel inflight our $2.5 Billion a copy B2 Stealth bombers, plus our multimillion dollar B1 Lancer Bombers and B52 Stratofortresses and various smaller WMD aircraft.

It is not cheap bombing caves, mudhuts, peasants and camels a world way...ya know.

Our enemy has no Navy, Airforce, Army or Marine Corps. but it has a weapon called the element of TIME. Time is not on our side @ $500M a day.

The element of time and the reality of expense is what the USA must face in the long run as we try to bomb our way to peace and freedom.

Shall it be billion dollar BULLITT TRAINS or Billion dollar Bombers or both, as Sen. Everett Dirksen said.... " a billion here and a billion there ,pretty soon that adds up to be a lot of money".

How far can the twisted claw of government reach into the future to borrow money for the mistakes and extravagences of today?

Debary taxpayers,

Here we go again? Council member Chris Carson and other civic manipulators are launching yet another Debary committee.

Get ready for this one TAXPAYERS, let's read between the lines.

Visit the 'City of Debary' website for the Feb 2, 2011 AGENDA and scroll to this latest move for another committee.

This new "Community Event Committee" claims to bolster a sense of community and enhance the quality of life in Debary.

So let's cut the bull out for once, their is an economic agenda going on here, there always is.

This initial meeting they will discuss events for their MASTER Calender to include July 4th fireworks and a December Symphony EVENT.

Lets quote the article " this will not cost the city any money at this point". Of course it won't, that is how civic manipulators 'front load' an activity that will eventually cost the TAXPAYERS money.

The devil is in the details, lets us follow this Committee and see what non profit organization is behind this.

The December Symphony Event will be held WHERE? Can we guess, as this committee will also discuss future 'fund raising events'.

Will any of these FUNDS from these 'fund raising events' ever get back to the Taxpayers?

Mr Carson...what organization will profit from these fundraising events? How much will be fleeced from the local taxpayers in the name of a sense of community and Quality of LIFE?

Lets hear more about these 'future fundraising events'. Where will these funds go and who will spend them and what shall they spend them on?

2/27:

I would like to thank the City for keeping the amount of signs that cluttered 17/92 and Enterprise Road under control. It was getting to be nothing more than an eyesore. Ninety eight percent of the taxpayers had to look at the sign pollution everyday, so the other two percent could increase their businesses. Please don't allow this to happen to our City again. I feel the business community took advantage of the good heartedness of this great City.

R. Green

From Norm: At the last City Council meeting a business person approached the Council to extend the waiver to allow signage as it existed per Mr. Green's observations above. This would be the third such extension and if I were on the Council I would motion to either make these changes permanent or say enough is enough they cause too many code enforcement issues and they make our avenues look too polluted. It's time to either make it permanent or no. I don't like "either/or" fallacies, but this is the third time. If it's really worked then change the code. However, you have Mr. Gochal of the DeBary Diner on record saying he violates the ordinances if he sees someone else doing it; it clearly places an extra burden on staff.

2/23:

Bob and Mort have the right idea but they are looking in the wrong area. When communities are measured for their quality of life, one of the benchmarks are parks and recreational facilities. I believe we need and want nice parks in our community. However, we don't need an inverted pyramid organizational structure.
If you really want to look at trimming the non-value added fat in City Hall, the
Code Enforcement area needs to be closely scrutinized. If they just drove around aimlessly all day trying to make busywork for a bunch of under qualified, overpaid bureaucrats, that would be one thing. But not only do they do that, our in-house Gestapo harasses the citizenry and most likely does more harm than good.
At least bloated staff in Parks is benign, at worst.
CE actively decreases the quality of life in DeBary, they consume valuable real estate in City Hall and they duplicate services that can be done at the county better and cheaper.
If the City Manager and our elected representatives are interested in organizational reengineering and cost cutting,
CE is the low hanging fruit.
While they are at it, how about a contract review of the outsourced permitting department?

2/22:

Mort you just don't get it. Now look....we are a park and recreation director, then we have a supervisor of parks and a supervisor of recreation and each one of them have an assistant. Who knows how many people work under them because when I was running for council I found that even questioning this area is almost 'taboo'. There is a very big chunk of money going into ALL these parks around the city. The best thing I heard was that maybe we could have a carnival at River City Park. There is nothing else going on down there so I am all for that one. But Mort...........leave it alone. We must have supervision on all these supervisors who are supervising the workers who are doing all the work. ''Speaking words of wisdon - let it be'' (The Beetles)

Gentlemen

Remember when Debary had a surplus and was going to keep government small?

I knew that had to be a lie because the 'cancer' of government spending does not work that way.

According to the Debary proposed budget 2010-11 it looks as if  Debary is $12 million in debt or so and spending $1 million a year servicing our debt.

It also appears that our government has grown to 19 employees of which many got a 3% pay raise.  Teachers and government workers are being laid off nation wide as governments cannot control spending.  So Debary gives pay raises and wants to WASTE more money on silly projects

It appears we are going to spend $67,210 on Gateway Park for ADA imp. .... whatever that is.

How much more money can the City of Debary waste on that park anyway?   It is a 9 acre disgrace as it is ,complete with it's own non profit Gateway Art & Politics  fundraising center.

Look at our UNFUNDED PROJECT LIST !!!      Are you serious?  This is just for the bloated Parks and REC Dept.

Another ..$146K for the GATEWAY PARK playground.... why not round it off to $150 million? Lets not confuse this with the $67K ADA project for the same NON PARK..PARK.

$ 159K for the Bill Keller Park playground.....where is Bill Keller Park anyway and who would go there assuming they could find it?

$ 180K for a lighting upgrade at Rob Sullivan Park....why can't they play ball  on a full moon with flashlights.  Debary taxpayers get the electric bill for this micro boondoogle as well....who cares, it is just taxpayer money.

$ 14K for a basketball court.....why?    What is next a skateboard Park or treehouse , Debary has lots of cash to throw away.

Don't ...YOU PEOPLE have any respect for the taxpayers that have to pay for all these ridiculous wasteful extravagances?

Which vendors or contractors will benefit from these uneccessary projects, are they local boys?

Perhaps Debary should layoff municipal workers in order to save enough money to pay for the extravagant plans of its Parks Dept.

Let' s layoff the entire Parks Dept for 6 months of the year, who would miss them?  We never even had a Parks dept.  years ago and did just fine without them.

When are our elected officials going to think about the taxpayer for once instead of all this wasteful spending?

Debary Citizens

Who is bombing Florida?

Are your windows rattling on Sunday morning?

It is because we are being bombed by our own Pentagon as our violent nation practices to bomb other nations.

That is right , feel the concussions from our bombs from the Pinecastle Bombing Range in the Ocala National Forest all the way to Debary.

Now you get some kind of idea what other people and nations world wide have gone through when being bombed.

The US Government has bombed....
Iraq,Pakistan,Afghanistan,Lebadon,Lybia,Cuba,Cambodia,Laos,Vietnam,Germany,France,Japan,Panama, etc. We need the practice to bomb worldwide ,so we bomb our own nation, go figure that!

Our paranoid military has been bombing our own nation for years from Eglin AFB in the panhandle to the Ocala National forest to Puerto Rico. New Mexico, etc.

We even nuked Bikini Atoll in 1947, just for practice....not bad for a nation that actually considers itself peaceful.

Interesting how our Church groups are feeling the concussion of our bombs as they pray to their 'Prince of Peace' on Sunday morning.

I still ask the question...who would JESUS BOMB?

Debary citizens....go look for yourself, YOU do the research.

Visit the Daytona News Journal website home page, just a couple of clicks away. Scroll all the way down and you will find the national debt clock as it spins away, demonstrating our nation's freefall into Mega Debt.

The numbers are astounding, almost beyond fiction, there is NO WAY our federal government could print money that fast.

Remember the Gold Standard, that lie ended in 1933
Remember the Silver standard that lie ended in 1964
How about the post 1964 PAPER MONEY standard where the US Government guarenteed that your paper dollars were backed up by more paper dollars?
We have actually lowered that low standard because our government cannot print paper faster than it is being borrowed.

Where are we borrowing it from? Where do you borrow from?

We are actually borrowing from our theoretical ability to pay those funds back in the future. So we might borrow from a bank ,but we ae actually borrowing from our future.

Now , it is time for us all to face our children and grandchildren and tell them how we are STEALING their future by borrowing and spending THEIR money.

Our leaders and governments are so irresponsible and corrupt that they are reaching far into the future to borrow money for our current generation that refuses to live within its means.

What kind of desperate person would borrow more money just to pay the intrest on debt he already owes? What kind of desperate nation would borrow hundreds of billions just to pay the intrest on the trillions it already owes?

How long will the debt bubble last, how long can the lies continue?
How can we consider ourselves as the richest nation in the world yet owe so much? Will there be a day of reckoning, is it upon us?

These High Speed Rail projects are about as ridiculous as our $500 million a day 'terror war' in the mideast. They are short term wasteful measures to disguise long term problems that we have no real answers for.

Both President Obama and Republican majority leader Boehner recently said referring to the US Government ...."we are broke". Both are wrong, we are at LEAST $14 trillion beyond broke , we wish we were broke!

The USA claims to be a great superpower, maybe.... how about a SUPER IRRESPONSIBLE, SUPER BORROWER, super spender that has a standard of living that is unsustainable.

The past does not equal the present or the future, the USA is not the really wealthy nation it once was.

Our Senators and congressmen are still living the lie and slicing the Washington pork for the locals, even as they know " we are broke".

2/16/11:

What a great day for the people of Florida when Governor Scott rejected Federal money for the Bullet Train project. This will save the taxpayers a whole lot of money instead of wasting it on this boondoggle. I see Governor Scott uses the word boondoggle to. I hope he will nix the Sunrail, another boondoggle. When the kings of boondoggle get their way, the taxpayers will foot the bill for their blurred visions.

You guys at POP were so far ahead of the curve on this one. I have been a steady reader of POP for a long time and feel you have been right more times than not. I will apologize to you at POP for not standing up and supporting you, and allowing you to get beat up day after day by a handful of people that simply do not agree with you (big deal). I for one will do better and keep myself tuned in better from now on. Keep up the good work.

******************************************

With the latest wave of incompetent dictators being washed out of office, there is some hope for our little town. I was especially encouraged by the reminder posted on DeBary POP on February 2 regarding King Roberto's pledge to not seek re-election in 2011 when his term is up.

I actually researched the quote and found it here:

http://www.cfnews13.com/article/news/2010/july/127427/Mayor-works-out-of-pickup-truck

Of course, my preference is to not wait until next Fall. Rather, we should continue with the recall movement and force his highness into exile before he causes any more damage.

Failing the recall to be completed by the time his term expires and the King simply keeps his word; it should be interesting to see who accedes to the throne.

2/15/11:

Debary Officials

According to your website, $2200 per day is what the Debary Parks and REC  Department is costing .  $810, 555  annually to operate how many empty under used parks.

$2200 per day for what , all these tiny parks that are so uneccesary. We have 2 nice county parks already that the taxpayers are forced to support.

This money wasting dept. wants  another $146,000 for  "safety and replacement" in Gateway Park .  Gateway Park is not even a park, it is a parking lot for a non profit government funded business that operates there for free on city property.   The Gateway Center for the Arts dominates Gateway Park,  how soon will  GATEWAY be charging our parks dept to operate out of their park?  GCA charges for everything, why should they let our parks and rec. dept operate in their park for free?

The Debary website also states that we need to waste $180K for lighting at Rob Sullivan Park and $14K for a basketball court.  Our citizens need nothing of the sort, if people want to play games let em pay for it, government is not a sport business.

We need  finacial responsibility, we need parks to be closed and people to be laid off, that is what DEBARY needs.   Our city wasted millions on a city hall when it should have shoved city government into the millions of square feet of empty office space this city has.

The wasteful Parks and Rec. dept is a good place to start trimming the ugly fat from Debary's bloated budget. This dept actually wants $132,000 more dollars from the city next year...when it deserves nothing at all.

ps. another taxpayer sick of Debary and its unchecked government growth

&

According to the previous post, our Mayor Bob Garcia thanked our US Congessmen Mr John Mica for his HELP on local projects.

What was that HELP, could it have been federal dollars? After all what is the federal government but a financial teat for every county, state, municipality or individual.

The City of Debary like any municipality has a sense of entitlement as it begs , lobbys and grovels for federal dollars. Take out a map of the USA, every town, city, county, state is groveling and begging to their US Congressman for money from the empty federal purse.

Alaska wanted millions for its 'bridge to nowhere' , Spartanburg SC. got federal dollars for its famous 'Teapot Museum' and Debary is no different with it's ridiculous Arts Center. The people behind these projects are a disgrace as they pick the carcass of a nation they know cannot afford it.

If we build or buy submarine houses in low areas we can just get another bailout from the feds through Mr Mica, then we can complain about high taxes, never once accepting reponsibility.

The citizens of Debary and America curse high taxes yet , with the exact same mouth ,have no problem at all begging for Federal help for their ridiculous extravagences and mistakes.

Sometime this March our corrupt federal government will go broke again as it passes its $14.5 trillion debt ceiling.

The debt ceiling is just another illusion and lie as our phony politicians vote to raise the debt ceiling once more.

Actually the debt ceiling means ZERO as the "richest nation on the planet" freefalls into debt at an astounding $4 billion per day in borrowed money.

So THANKS...REP MICA thanks for feeding the Local municipal, county, state and individual VULTURES , they will re elect you again and again as they have done in the past.

It is all about FEDERAL money, the governement gravy train that is rumbling down the track with a VULTURE CULTURE on it's back.

RESPONSE FROM BOB WALDORF:

I agree. That's right I agree with your comments about the Mayor praising Mica. I was going to write something about that but you beat me to it. If I remember correctly Mr. Marks told us right before he left office that he had contacted Mr. Mica and Mr. Nelson about getting some money owed to Debary, from FEMA. I remember Mr. Marks telling everyone that he got a response from Mr. Nelson but did not say he got one from Mr Mica. I know I personally went to his office on Deltona Blvd shortly after that and left a letter backing up Mr. Marks request. I never heard anything from him on that either.

Not even acknowledging he received it. He is one of the 'old timers' that should not have gotten re-elected and hopefully will not next time.

So what has Mr. Mica done for us here in Debary?

If anyone can say what it is - give me a call on the next online radio show: www.bobindebary.com

Many disappointed with Rep. Mica's 'listening event'

News Journal

Will Hobson

DELAND -- About 30 minutes into U.S. Rep. John Mica's Saturday "listening event" at the DeLand Chamber of Commerce, the Winter Park Republican, who was in the midst of a lengthy answer to a brief question, joked about himself, "Listen to this guy. He said he was going to come to listen, and all he's doing is talking."

A man a few feet away from him loudly agreed, "I was thinking the same thing."

"He's the consummate politician," Gion said. "He's deft at deflecting questions, and elongating answers. I just think he's been in office too long. He's starting to think as a Washingtonian, and not as a Floridian."

One man lauded his efforts as a wise spender. DeBary Mayor Bob Garcia thanked Mica for his help with local projects.

2/5/11:

DAYTONA BEACH — Volusia County Chairman Frank Bruno acknowledged high unemployment, closed businesses and plummeting property values but still declared the county as "better than good."

Bruno offered his annual address Monday and touted budget cuts that led to tax cuts, projects aiming to bring more jobs, and brighter economic times.

"My message to you today is that the state of Volusia County is good — No, we're better than good," Bruno said

There seems to be two Volusia Counties: the one that our Council was talking about last night, particularly Mr. Carson and the Mayor.  This Volusia County is perfect...evething is going fine...it's great; yes, we have some prob...er...challenges...we have some challenges...but all is for the best in this the best of all Counties. CM Carson even remarked at the last meeting about the "positive spin" the County is putting out - although I don't think he meant it exactly the way it came out. The positive spin didn't work as the commentary below can attest.

The other County is the one described below.  Somewhere between the constant rose-colored glasses of our leaders and what is written below is the truth.  Too much of either one isn't good for the decision making process.

This county has always been corrupt. Ruled by typical liberal deadbeat democrats. High taxes on property and gasoline, over regulation by government hacks. None of these people could find a job in the private sector. Look who is on the county council. Well we point out how worthless the local government is but we keep electing the same clowns to high office. The first thing the new Orlando mayor did was to cut city government....the local political hacks in Volusia add to government and add more regulations. Question? Would a upscale employer want to move to Orange, Seminole, or Volusia County? Question? Why have over 70 large German companies started operations in Alabama? Answer. A business friendly environment, low taxes, right to work state. Volusia County does attract some companies...more large gas stations, more handy Way stores, and more betting houses.

People its time to vote in a new county council. They are corrupt enough to vote themselves and the county manager a raise ( doesnt matter what form it is in its still a raise) and not include other county employees for 3 years now and not save the people they serve any money. They have not brought in any development all I see is an influx of the homeless and no one doing anything about it. **** Dinneen give your own employees a raise also if you take one so they can spend more money in our towns that way you dont look as a bad. People the council hires the manager so if we want new leadership vote them out when they come around on the ballot.

Hello Lenny. Funny you bring up that question abut the race track. I just wrote on MY blog today that I don't understand why in a FREE country we try and prevent so many things like - 'card rooms'. Please don't try to protect me from myself. I am old enough to get IN and OUT of trouble on my own (don't ya know) and so are most of the citizens of Debary. It really is a bur under my saddle that card rooms that provide gaming that are used by seniors ( mostly not all ) are being band. Not everyone wants to sit and watch grass grow and not everyone wants to join the VFW, MOOSE or other lodges. So why is it such a big deal to prevent the freedom of choice and don't spin it any other way. Prohibiting a business is prohibiting me from having a choice. PERIOD !!! So where is the freedom?

1/28/11:

Now, now, Norm here you go again about 1/2 truths. Yes, the city manager did give direction to Mr. Seelbinder to work on F.E.M.A which he did. What he swore to under oath was that the Mayor DID NOT give him direction, but we won't go there. After the city manager GAVE direction to Mr. Seelbiner, and Mr. Seelbinder sent the paperwork in that is when the Mayor started contacting Congressman Mica about the monies, to see if the city could receive them quicker. At least give the Mayor credit for that! The Mayor did for the city as a Mayor should. Former councilman Lenny Marks tried to do the same thing with the pump issue when he sent Senator Nelson and Congressman Mica a letter to see what he could do about the money is this not true?

Angie Dobies

From Norm: Thank you for reading POP, Angie. Of course we "won't go there" because it would mean accepting the following: in Sept. of 2009 when the Mayor responded to Val Emerson he said without hesitation, loud and proud that he, the Mayor, asked Mr. Seelbinder to focus on FEMA because we weren't going to wait years to get the money back. He said it very strongly. Only to find out...well...he DIDN'T ask Mr. Seelbinder. So I understand why you wouldn't want to go there. But what you state is so insulting to staff and Congressman Mica: we really only got the money as fast as we did because the Mayor called? Mica won't do his best for DeBary unless the Mayor calls him? We do agree that Lenny sent the letter but he was informing us what he was trying to do rather than attempt at taking credit for something.

The Mayor said he would be ok with the office being taken away - then he complained to everyone from Central Florida up to CNN.

The Mayor said he was FOR the Strategic Planning Committee - until Lenny found out the Mayor was collecting monies from individuals to pay for the committee. When that was found out, the Mayor voted "NO" to the Committee. When asked about why it was not brought back both Mr. Gonzalez and the Mayor were on the same page about Mr. Abels saying it should not come back until the new City Manager was hired - I talked to Mr. Abels; he never said that or suggested it.

The Mayor would have us believe that he would never use the words "son of a bitch" as he did in reference to Mr. Weaver - the Mayor said at the time as did Mr. Meister that the Mayor doesn't use such words; yet he is on television saying "bullshit" as it related to the office issue.

The fecal blizzard created by the Mayor has led at least for me and only a couple of other people in DeBary to come to the conclusion that I simply can't take the Mayor at his word. There is too much on the record that is then contradicted for me to accept it. You say he called Mica...I don't know that. Maybe when he said he called what he really meant is he DIDN'T call...just like when he said he asked Mr. Seelbinder to focus on FEMA...the Mayor meant he DIDN'T ask him. But he is out and about and loves to go to events and talk to people and that's what people really appreciate; I get too caught up in saying what you mean and meaning what you say and being able to read and comprehend and all that jazz. Now on to Mr. Waldorf:

I remember I spoke out at the council meeting about how I thought the new business license fee would be a good revenue generator. The council said no it was not intented for that it was intended for control which I am stongly against as I believe we have too much government control already. However I went to get a new city of Debary occupational license only to find out that the fire inspection would be $50 while in Orange City it was only $15 (in November 2010 anyway). So lets see......not a revenue generator because Debary license will be cheaper than the surrounding cities BUT our fire inspection will cost more. If that is not a revenue generator - what is??

Bob Waldorf

From Norm: The fees charged for conducting fire inspections are distinct and separate from the Business License Tax (BLT) and were adopted in 2009, when the contract for fire services was approved. Perhaps the confusion between the BLT and the fire inspection fee for commercial businesses opening or renewing a BLT  in existing buildings is that the application for or renewal of a BLT triggers the need for a fire inspection - but that comes from the contract that was approved in 2009 not what was approved with the BLT.

Here are how the fees work:

  • Fees for inspections on new construction. These inspections look at fire suppression systems, compliance with fire codes, etc. The fees collected are divided up with 50% going to Orange City, 25% going to PDCS (Jim Stroup) and 25% goes to the City of Debary.

  • Fees for commercial businesses applying for or renewing a BLT in existing buildings. I believe this may be is the inspection Mr. Waldorf is referring to. The fire inspection fees in this category are exactly double those charged by Orange City with Orange City receiving 50% of the fees collected and the City of Debary receiving 50% of the fees. The lowest fire inspection fee charged by Orange City is $25 for buildings up to 5000 sq. ft

The cost of the fire inspection is not from what we passed with the BLT but the contract with Orange City.

Your recent editorial about APATHY was interesting.

It reminds me about the guy that asked an american to define Ignorance and Apathy...He Replies ... "I do not know and I do not give a damn".

Most americans are too busy trying to live and enjoy their lives personally to get involved in issues of any meaning collectively.

Why do you think sports & entertainment is so popular? Because it does not really mean anything. The same teams are going to play next year as our society blindly stumbles into the future with not much of a plan except entertainment and daily survival.

Now ..the FUTURE...that is an interesting subject.

What did the exact center of the intersection of 17-92 and Highbanks look like in 1911, a century ago, or 1811...200 years ago?

How about the future 100 years from now, anybody care?

Where are we headed globally, nationally or locally? Is the question to large to entertain you?

7 billion human beings devouring our (1) one and only planet....who cares, what does that have to do with our Vulture Culture anyway?

Any numbers of Gods will save us in the end, as we fly away to heaven on our "golden wings of wishful thinking" fantasy. Hopefully we shall fly away before we totally trash the only real gift we have, the natural world.

Oh , by the way, stay away from 17-92 & Highbanks, ya might get run over.

1/21/11:

The other day I went to get an occupational license for new business I was starting in Debary. When I walked in to the tax office to get my license, as I have done in the past, I was handed a piece of paper with instructions on how to fill online. ONLINE? With my bad attitude in check I drove back to my house to apply for my license ONLINE. Not like the entire concept I went through step by step in filing out the application only to be told at the end of the application that I would be '' notified in the next FEW days '' if my location was approved for my type of business. I immediately realized that while I knew my office location would be approved I also considered what others might do while they were 'waiting' for a reply. They just might drive over the bridge and find a place in Sanford or Seminole county that would give a yes or no immediately - you know - like in the old days before computers. The more I thought about it the more upset I got with the process and the staw that broke the camels back was when I called the to correct a mistake I had made online only to be told there was nothing that could be done until the entire process had been complete and then I could address my mistake. THIS IS WHY I THINK GOVERNMENT IS TO BIG FOR ITS OWN GOOD. While I was simmering waiting for an approval I decided to call Pat Northey and tell her what I thought of the 'system'. She immediately called me back and was surprised to hear of how difficult it was to get an occupational license. She said she would look into it and guess what..........the very next day Peggy Flomerfelt from the revenue department called me and we had a long long chat. She was pleased with my input and did acknowledge that since the new process went into effect last year that there were bugs to work out and she would definately put this one as something that needed to be addressed. So again I want to thank Commissioner Pat Northey and Peggy Flomerfelt for addressing this issue. Thank you.

Thanks for your time and effort to keep DeBary on the right path, and I hope the new Council will continue to follow your lead.

NORM,
You do the same thing to people that you accuse people of doing. Half truths and so on. I only wrote to tell you I never called your house and left a message of any kind. If I have something to say I am not afraid to tell you to your face. Yes there have been times we have exchages words of worthlessness, but it has been on both sides not just one. It seems to me that you like to dish it out ,but not take it. I am sure in your position you have taken alot, but you have put alot out also. Have you not? I will not go around, and around in words with you anymore because I realize nobody wins. The fact is you have your opinion , I have mine. WE will probably never see eye-to-eye but that's the way it goes.

NELSON
I have never met you even at the Moose Lodge, you must be talking about someone else. I do not drink beer nor do I smoke. The only thing we will ever have in common is we both live in Debary and we both ride Harleys. Yes Nelson YOU did make a racial remark directed at the Mayor, As one of your yahoo group persons put it when you bring in someones ethnic backround into your remarks of attack that is RACISM. Go back to yahoo groups and read what you wrote and the replies you will see people did not like it. You seem like a man to me that just wants to argue the point instead of discuss it, because if people do not agree with you they are wrong. As far as the Moose Lodge goes WE donate more time and monies from fund raisers than most to help feed and support the needs of OUR neighbors right here in Debary and I hope that never stops. Without the Moose Lodge many people would not of had a meal on Thanksgiving or Christmas, or a childs would not have a gift to open on christmas day, something many take for granted.

1/13/11:

Regarding Bob's comments posted on DeBaryPOP about personal attacks and mud-slinging; I believe people these days are way too thin-skinned.

If Norm or DeBaryPop calls out somebody for doing or saying something stupid or pointing out dysfunctionality that he's observed from his position as a member of council, he is immediately accused of "personal attacks".

Some of the bigger crybabies actually go farther and throw out accusations of racism. Trust me. I know first hand.

My informal observation seems to indicate that Norm, by far, has been the target of online personal attacks more than anyone else. I'm probably a distant second tied with Lenny but it's mainly because we've raised the ire of some of the less evolved in the City and their best defense is to engage in name calling.

I find it ironic that the very people who really do engage in personal attacks and name-calling are the one's who squawk the loudest in accusing others of doing it. Pennysaver Boy and the mayor's concubine are probably the biggest offenders but the Pennysaver blog is full of them.

Just the fact that Norm or Lenny or I express our opinions or point out obvious disconnects and those opinions happen to differ from theirs makes us the subject of all kinds of vitriolic discourse.

In my short time as a subscriber to the Pennysaver blog, I was the target of a whole lot of personal attacks that went way beyond someone defending their point of view. I tried like hell to keep the discussion on-target but to no avail. Those people don't want to listen to or discuss any idea that doesn't fall into the way they see the world or think it should be. Their inability to articulate any sort of a rational argument backs them up against the wall and their refuge is to do what they do best; call names and issue threats.

I had an instructor in college point out to me once that the less a person knows about his position, the more he or she will talk over you and not allow you to get a word in edgewise. They'll babble on incessantly and when you do get a chance to speak, they'll butt in and interrupt you. At that point, you need to walk away because their ears are closed and there is no filter between brain and mouth (or keyboard). That's the Pennysaver Blog. And that's why I'm here and they're there.

But the personal attacks and threats are nothing. This might be where Bob is going with his plea for civility. I'm a big boy and I can take it. We're all big kids. What bothers me and probably Bob is that these people are so wrapped up in their tiny little consciousness that they take it to the next level. They can't walk away from a civil discussion and just leave it. They actually carry with them a deep seated hatred for the person with whom they've just engaged. That's what probably happened in Tucson and that's what I see happening here.

Pennysaver boy exudes this hatred for the DeBaryPop gang. You could feel it for Van Conoley. This is true for many of the regulars on the Pennysaver blog. I believe they feel so personally insulted when you out wit them that it goes deep into their soul and they feel that you have somehow violated them. Hence their hatred. Thankfully PB is harmless enough where all he can do is start his own wannabe blog.

I've never met most of them although that I'm sure if I happened to bump into Angie at the Moose club, drooling in her beer and she shook my hand with her nicotine-stained fingers, she might actually find out that we have a lot in common and genuinely like me. That is, until she found out my name.

I agree, the name calling shouldn't be a part of a civil discussion about issues that impact DeBary. But more importantly, nobody should hate someone else because they have a different take on an issue. It's perfectly ok to disagree and express those disagreements, shake hands and go out for a beer afterward.

So, as a service to the readers of DeBaryPop, I'd like to provide some do's and don'ts as guidelines so that moving forward, we can all get along even though we disagree.

Do's:

  • See the other person's perspective through their eyes in order to understand where they are coming from
  • Recognize that every case is not black and white. There could be a gray area or middle ground - It's possible that both sides could be partially correct
  • Remember that we are all neighbors and in this together

Don'ts:

  • Don't call somebody an obese welfare puppy who sits in his trailer watching endless re-runs of championship wrestling while he waits for his government check to arrive.
  • Don't call someone an illiterate barfly because they call you a racist
  • Don't just bitch about the mayor, participate in the recall.
  • Do not mistake malice for simple incompetence.

I hope this posting has helped folks calm down and realize that it's ok to have different opinions and still get along.

Nelson

I know this subject has nothing to do with important subjects such as Debarys curbside flower pots or parks and recreation but.....

Well, Debary citizens, another $6 billion has been wasted by our sad government on our "War on Terror" so far this year. Twelve days @ $500 million a day...but who cares the USA is soooooooo... rich!

It was not just any $6 billion, it was all borrowed money, borrowed from the future, or should I say our children's future.

Actually is was stolen from them, our children never got to vote on our sick destructive invasions and acts of revenge called a "WAR on TERROR".

Is the USA a superpower , or a superblunderer, as it bombs, invades and attacks worldwide under the false banner of freedom and democracy @ $500 million a day plus corpses.

Our TROOPS are only as good as their orders, to kick down doors and murder anyone they might suspect dares resist our invasion. They are just following orders just like German, Japanese and Russian soldiers were following orders.

What if Iraqi soldiers were here kicking our doors down, we we be stupid enough to believe they are not invaders?

Nazis and Japs used any excuse to attack and occupy other nations, why are we so different? We are attacking to dominate and control the region for our own economic purposes and alleged security.

Can our nation garrison and occupy the whole world with our military HEROES? Can our deadly military HEROES kill everyone that dares disagree with our total arrogance and domination.

Admiral Mullen chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, recently lied by stating we are winning this war!!!!!!!!!! OKAY Admiral, what exactly are we winning? What anyone?

Lets count our 9.5 years of WINNINGS....

1. perhaps as many as 6000 dead US servicemen plus thousands of injured and permanently disabled.

2. At least $3 trillion in new debt, that is a VERY conservative estimate. Hint...we never had the money...we stole it from the future by borrowing it as we VICTIMIZE future american generation with OUR DEBT.

3. Some say as many as 1 million dead Iraqis and Afgahns, who knows the real figure as we flatten these countries in the name of FREEDOM. Americans really do not care how many people we kill anyway, innocent or guilty...do they? Americans do NOT care about how many people their heroic military kills, never have.

4. We are winning NOTHING but more evil, more debt, more death and more destruction....all in the name of FREEDOM.

The sad and sorry events of 9/11/01 were the catalyst for all this evil to be unleashed ,the death and destruction that OUR NATION has released is far worse than the events of 9/11/01.

Some say we should declare another false VICTORY and just quit our sick, self destructive wars. Some say we should just nuke the whole region.

We are the enemy, our own worst enemy and we will lose on every level. Many claim the evil we have done to ourselves and the mideast far exceed anything these rotten terrorists have done, I happen to agree.

Our government claims our soldiers are great heroes, this may be true in many cases...too bad we are going to lose in the long run and all that destruction and debt will be for nothing.

Our corrupt government officials sent our troops to be picked off in Iraq, Afghanistan Vietnam then have the nerve claim they honor them.

The American people claim to love PEACE, that does not matter because their government is in love with war.

There is no money in Peace, the US government loves war and to raw profits for which it stands, our greatest enemy is our own greed and arrogance as we terrorize ourselves with paranoia and amplify our alleged valor.

Does GOD Bless any nation involved in.... MEGA DEBT, PERPETUAL WAR,Unwarrented INVASIONS,BOMBINGS, spying and HIGH TECH TERRORISM??

God Bless America!!! Land of the....what? What have we become?

1/12/11:

Here is my latest comment to Debarypop. I like the board, I like Mr. Erickson and I like Mr. Meister. However I have developed my own 'Sound Off' board at: www.talkaboutgov.com I really do believe that Mr. Erickson AND Mr. Meister need to stop the mud slinging but that is just my opinion. However if you want something new and refreshing stop by my board at www.talkaboutgov.com and let's voice some OPINIONS and NOT PERSONAL ATTACKS. Now I assume this will get posted but then.......I'm not sure but regardless I am NOT making personal attacks :) Hey everyone - do something constructive - visit your next Street Scape Committee. Well that's my opinion.......

Hey Norm.

On my recent posting I made a mistake (assuming you are going to post it)

My web address is: www.talkaboutgov.org  NOT .--- com

My mistake.

Please correct.

Bob Waldorf

From Norm: It's posted, Bob and stop the drum beat of "assuming you're going to post it" please. One of the personal attacks from Mr. Meister is that POP doesn't post all emails sent in. I responded to this and yet Mr. Meister and others on his blog continue to state that we don't post emails. Mr. Meister came to the podium and read an anonymous letter that Mr. Conoley carried a gun and would sooner shoot someone than anything else...I agree, Bob, enough with the personal attacks. Oh, and whose website allowed my wife and daughter to be brought into this? And whose website allows people to post comments calling other people "assholes"? All facts...but facts in DeBary are considered personal attacks...unless fiction is thrown at Lenny or Norm for bringing up facts. Mr. Meister criticizes this website then allows on his blog what he criticizes on this website. That's hypocritical. That's a fact.

1/7/11: From Nelson's Yahoo Blog: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/debary_fl

Kudos to www.debarypop.com for the 3 January 2011 editorial articulating what so many citizens feel but too often fail to say.

Surveying the Electronic Landscape: Part I takes to task a local blog which, in it's very short life, has become the Pennysaver of the DeBary digital media scene.

Outgoing councilman, Norm Erickson, in his usual common sense approach points out the hypocrisy and double standard that exists among a small but vocal group of "sour grapers" who have consistently had their asses kicked with facts and logical thinking. Frankly, I'm surprised that Erickson even addressed the bullshit that those people have been spewing over the last couple of years – mostly after they don't get their way or get handed another solid ass whuppin'. But now that he's a former, rather than a current councilman this is probably as good of a time as any for him to tell it like it is. It is my hope that Norm doesn't get dragged into the mud with those pigs by engaging in a prolonged pissing match. Rather, he, Lenny and John should continue to take the high road and keep pointing out the dysfunctionality when they see it. Leave the mud-slinging to me, boys.

I'll sling some by agreeing with Norm's premise that the "Pennysaver" blog was started by a resident who was consistently outgunned in more than one battle of wits. He figured that starting his wannabe blog would be a way to fight back against those who beat him with common sense and rational thinking. He was going to make it "Your" website and be everything that he said DeBaryPop wasn't.

Well, DeBaryPop gets regular mention in the Pennysaver blog and what Norm calls hypocrisy comes across as schizophrenia in many of Pennysaver Boy's postings.

Case in point: Pennysaver Boy, on a number of occasions, says he's done mentioning DeBaryPop. Here's one from 4 December 2010:

POP or Circumstances
« Thread Started on Dec 4, 2010, 4:23am

Okay, this will be my last time for a while that I am going to mention the other website. I have just taken a look at all that is involved with the community from a positive and a negative sense. It is a shame that these Councilmen do what they do on a website and consider it a service for there community and their constituents.

He then goes on to compare his Pennysaver blog with DeBaryPop over five paragraphs. Of course, the like-minded ninnies chime in with their own lovefest in support of these ideas. I might add that on that thread, I chimed in as well but it was with an off topic rant about booting King Roberto, which wasn't a very popular topic, BTW.

In the month or so since he swore off mentioning DeBaryPop, Pennysaver Boy probably referenced it or Norm or John or Lenny at least a dozen times, maybe more. It's like he's obsessed with exacting revenge on those whom he believes have bashed his head with the stupid stick.

But the split personality goes back much further than that. I recall Pennysaver Boy inciting a cackling riot and shout down at council meetings against Steve Costa, who only wanted to develop some of his property adjacent to their trailer park. But when other, equally invasive development is proposed in somebody else's back yard, Pennysaver boy and the trailer park band are all over supporting it.

More flip flopping? When Van Conoley roundly whipped his ass in the battle for the biggest loser, he personally assured me that he would take the high road and accept his defeat gracefully. That lasted about a week.

I saw at the last council meeting that Pennysaver boy lost out on a tight race for a position as an alternate on the EDAC. I'm sure he was feeling dejected and over time will probably find a way to blame somebody for the fact that not one man on the council considers him leadership material.

Rumor has it that PB (Pennysaver boy is getting too long to type and my spell checker doesn't like it) is hoping to make another run at elective office. I'd bet that if Conoley rose from the dead and made another run at it against PB, he'd win AGAIN.

PB just doesn't have the right stuff and I've told him that.

The sad thing is that at 40 something, PB ain't ever going to have the right stuff. But I digress.

In the battle of the blogs, the pennysaver blog is likely going to die a slow death. Like DeBaryPop, PB likes to tout how many hits he's getting. What he doesn't tell you is that it comes from his 11.5 regular members who seem to echo his points of view and post them ad nauseum.

DeBaryPop at least provides intelligent, thought provoking ideas that I may or may not agree with. I don't care who writes them. If you compare the postings of PB or his ninnies a month ago with more recent stuff, it's all the same shit. Those reruns get old.

That said, I would encourage everyone to read the postings on the Pennysaver blog, DeBaryPop and even debary_fl@... and understand where the posters are coming from.

I appreciated what Norm and Lenny brought to the council and I really wish they would have stayed on. But certainly, they and John should know that there are a lot more people who read DeBaryPop who agree with their perspective and approach and absolutely support them.

1/3/11:

Let's stop the name calling and finger pointing. I maintain that we have a couple of great venue to voice opinions but I believe we, as people, have more opinions on issues than what immediately faces our city. Our city issues are important but many of them come from national levels, down to the state then to the county and then to us. (do you even know that the 'feds' are requiring our city to spend thousands on street signs????) Crying about what ''has been'' does nothing but keep our focus off what is going on. Let's all take a break from personal attacks and history bashing and concentrate on the new national government, state government and lets give our newly elected officials a chance for us to see what direction they want to take. Everyone's voice counts and opinion matters but lets find a common ground to band together to make our VOICES heard. What is really important for this coming year is not.........what has happened in the past...............but the direction this country and this city is going in the future????

To whom it may concern,

I owe the citizens of Debary an apology for my error on the (1)one billion dollar cost to the citizens of Volusia county for our so- called 'War on Terror'.

My latest research at costofwar.com , reveals my figures were low, the cost according to their figures for Volusia County were $1,560,417,350 as of 0700 Sunday Morning. $1.5 billion....every penny borrowed from our children's future as our phony politicians look the other way. Debary represents a certain percentage of Volusia County's population whatever that percentage is will reveal the cost to Debary citizens.

Perhaps we should all do the research on this 10 year military/economic disaster and see our destructive progress as we destroy the economic future of this country for our distorted revenge of the moment.

If the USA is actually a rich super power , why are we borrowing billions just to pay the interest on our national debt? If anyone has any answers , I would like to hear them.

12/30:

Our sick bogus war on terror is still costing the US taxpayer at least $500 million a day.     We choose high tech terrorist weapons as opposed their low tech terror weapons ,as we invade other nations and try to impose our will upon others.

Iraq belongs to IRAQS and Afghanistan belongs to Afghans, our attempt to set up sham democracies are ridiculous and unrealistic.

The war is VERY MUCH a Debary issue, in fact it has cost the citizens of Volusia County over $1 billion so far in wasted taxpayer dollars.

Have you noticed how this war is being ignored by our politicians because none have the guts to admit it is an expensive foolish misadventure doomed to failure. We are doing exactly what our enemy wants and fail to recognize the obvious.... we are defeating ourselves.

As with our last total disgraceful failure in Vietnam...every penny and every life and sacrifice will be wasted. The US governement does not and cannot control itself, much less the rest of the world.   We are basically a bankrupt.....superpower and our real enemy is far more serious than any terrorist amatuers...it is ourselves.

Our failure in this so called WAR on TERROR is guarenteed by the element of time and reality of expense, our objectives are unrealistic and ridiculous.

Meanwhile the economic 'war show' goes on, as our war corporate profiteers suck the blood out of our nation in the name of national security and freedom.

What famous person said; "When fighting monsters, take care, as a monster you shall become" ?   We have evolved into a nation at constant war for economic reasons, as I said before, follow the money...just follow the money, this war has very little to do with freedom , security or terror and everything to do with those billions in  profits as corporate america raids the US treasury.

The USA is $14 TRILLION  worse than broke and losing a war that it started on lies and will eventually end on lies. Our forces cannot stay in the mideast forever and we cannot kill all the hundreds of millions of people that hate us.  The US needs to go home and withdraw its fangs of revenge from the mideast, we are just hurting ourselves in the long run.

12/28:

Relative to May Wilson's comments regarding banner signs I agree that it would be nice to not see them or other code violations.

Unfortunately the City Code Enforcement Officer is no longer taking a pro-active role to identify violations. As reflected in the below extract from the CEB August minutes the Code Enforcement Officer is now addressing only those violations reported by the residents of our community.

"As entertained by Staff – Mr. Hooker informed the Board that the City would now be taking a reactive rather than proactive approach to code compliance."

May, if you see any banner signs they will remain in place until you or another resident of our community notify the CEB Officer of their existence. He may have observed them himself but cannot do anything until a resident first contacts him.

Best wishes in the new year.

12/24:

Another year is about to begin and I wish the best for all of our citizens. May the arguing and shouting at Council meetings cease, may the five members learn to work together, and may the budget be balanced all year long. We will be assaulted again with gambling interests, and gas stations too close to homes, we will hopefully not see any more illegal banner signs trashing the vistas of the City and keep our library open.
